Anyone know who played steel on Stephen Stills' Change Partners (1st cut on SS II album)? Could it be Garcia? Al Perkins? I couldn't find anything in the archive on this... Thanks, Rick Summers |

Only two guitarists (no steel) are credited according to cdnow: Eric Clapton and Nils Lofgren. Did Nils play psg that long ago? |

The more I listen, the more I think it to be Jerry Garcia... I've looked everywhere I can think of for a credit.. It would fit the time frame when Jerry played steel though..

Thanks Nick! Excellent find.. and confirms my earlier expectations... I've always loved the song, and since I started to learn pedal steel I tend to gravitate back to the tunes and sounds that made me want to play steel in the first place.. seems Garcia's sound always puts me into an introspective mood and after learning "Teach.." and "Wheel" I can finally hear signature sounds of a few of the steelers from that genre... then after playing with the song a few more times the changes seemed very Garcia-ish.. Love it! Thanks All.. might as well close this here thread..

Just getting my $.02 worth in.
I couldn't find my vinyl copy but it sounds like it would not help.Like others I loved that song and was a big fan of Stills.I would have said it was Al Perkins but I looked at a bio of CSN&Y by Dave Zimmer and found this: Stills toured after that album with Steve Fromholz on guitar along with Dallas Taylor, Fuzzy Samuels, Paul Harris and the Memphis Horns. The tour did not go well and in Cleveland he met up with Chris Hillman who was with the Burritos and convinced him and fellow Burritos Byron Berline and Al Perkins to join him in what later became Manassas.
I found this out before seeing the web site that pretty well confirms it was Jerry Garcia.
