I love them, right up until it comes time for maintenance. They are really cool lap steel amps and have lovely tones. Just a lot of upkeep. I am kind of weak in the electronics arena, or I'd probably use them a lot more.

I've got an Oahu single 10" with 2 6973 power tubes that I just love for lap steel. [This message was edited by Jeff Watson on 16 May 2005 at 04:13 PM.] |

I have one of the mid-'40s art-deco ones, with an 8" speaker. The larger version of mine, I think, was called the El Capitan. It has a volume control and that's it, no tone control, because it doesn't need one. Wonderful amps. Evidently, Jimmy Page used to use a white one, in the studio. |

I have an Oahu (or technically it's on long term lone from Andy Marshall at THD) which has 2XEL84 tubes and a 10" speaker. It is absolutely amazing sounding. Here's a sample: http://tyack.com/motherless.wma

David,
Here's a link ......I while back a company called Jester Enterprises sold Oahu amps that were new models.....They had a 2 - EL84 amp, and also a 2-6V6 model amp.....They were both supposedly GREAT sounding amps.....Do a search on Jester and you might come up with more info ......Jim

The majority of old Oahu amps were manufactured by Valco in Chicago Illinois. Here is a web site devoted to Magnatone and Valco amplifiers. Valco produced amps for National, Supro, Gretsch, Airline (Montgomery Ward catalog) and Oahu.
