Hi SGF:

I remembered years ago that I had a black and white photograph of me with my modified Harlin Brothers Multi-Kord pedal steel guitar taken around 1961.

My brother is down in Los Angeles straightening out my fathers affairs (my dad is now in a board-and-care home) and he located that photograph. I just scanned it and put it on my website so here it is:

You should notice a couple things about this photo if you look closely:

1. The Multi-Kord had been stripped and painted white and I replaced the stock fret board with a Fender fret board.

2. My afgan dog, "Kalu" only has three (3) legs. She was hit by a car when she was a puppy and she lived her entire life (around 14 years) on three legs. She was quite a dog and the loss of one leg never affected her life style (although we never breeded her) or her fast running speed.

3. I looked better then then I do now (besides having more hair), as evidenced by this photo of me at the "Pioneers of Western Swing" meeting of the Seattle Western Swing Music Society in Everett, WA on the weekend of August 10th:

I'm playing my Fender 1000 with the Buddy Wilson Western Swing Band and behind me are Gary McLaughlin on sax and Sammy Daulong on trumpet. It was a lot of fun there and the western swing music I heard there was just....the best!

I hope you enjoy the photos and if you ever get over to southern Oregon, stop by and say "hello."

Great shots, Al!

My Dad always refers to 3-legged dogs as "mathematical dogs" - Puttin' down 3 and carryin' 1.

Great shot Al! Look at those paws! Kalu really had some mits on her!

Those of us who started on Multi-Kords should get a special merit badge or something, don'tya think?

Thanks for the pic,

-GV

I'll vote for that....even though I had other
steels first starting in 1946 w/a 6 string mail-order lap steel. The MultiKord was my first steel with pedals! I got it used about 1954. 6 str & 4 pedals & I tuned it to C6th.
I gave up my volume pedal in favor of using both feet.....What do you mean knee levers??
never heard of them? what a great idea! When did they arrive on the scene, guys???

Al:

I hope to get up to So. Oregon sometime soon. Say "hi" to my buddy Marshall. I thought that was him on sax till you identified the players. --JR
