| Does anyone know who plays that straight steel on the Sponge Bob Squarepants cartoons? Is somone out in L.A. recording that stuff now for that track, or are they just dusting off some old recordings? For that matter, who played that steel in the old Looney Toons theme? |

Brandin plays most of the Sponge Bob steel, but if it sounds like a Bigsby, it's probably Jeremy Wakefield.
The original steel guitar intro to Looney Tunes was Freddy Tavares, I believe. Many people have played that famous slide since the 1940's. Even I did it on many cartoons and with the live show Bugs Bunny on Broadway, until they came to their senses and realized that no special skill is required, and nowadays in the live show, one of the 2nd violinists plays it on a pawnshop steel. |

I do believe that the episode 'Going back to Texas" has Junior Brown playing as well as a little vocal hum at the end of the episode.
It's such a great show, my kids and me watch it all the time over and over.

Not so sure about that Theresa. My daughter watches it all the time (I watch a lot too) and she didn't realize it was a steel guitar. Probably because of the Hawaiian style of playing. I would probably still watch if it had no steel playing.

It's true, kids and the public don't always know the difference between the sounds of steel or dobro and regular guitars. But if you want your kids to get a little more respect for you and your steel, work up a little of that Sponge Bob stuff and play it for them. My four kids were thrilled. They had no idea me and that ole Sho-Bud they're always bumping into could do the "real thing" like that.
