Ok-here's the skinny. The New Riders of the Purple Sage are being given a lifetime acheivement award by High Times Magazine (yeah,yeah....go ahead, take your best shot. At least hemp freaks manage to keep their publication in business...)
This will be at BB King's club in Times Square on September 25th. John Dawson, David Nelson, and Cage will be there and will perform 4 or 5 songs after the award. There was some question as to whether McDuke would make it, but he's coming-now I gotta figure out a way to be there. I believe the drummer form Nelson's band will play, and I don't know who will play bass yet-as you know, Dave Torbert passed on some time ago. This should be a rather memorable night-I hope to cover it for the newsletter, but I gotta get there, and I'm working on that.
More as I get it, but that's the main news. As to whether a more extensive reunion is in the works, I can only say-keep your fingers crossed. But this should be wonderful.

Didn't Bobby Black do some shows with a version of the group last year?
A pity they weren't recording much when Bobby was on baord all those years ago. No direspect to Buddy Cage though, he's an awesome player and helped hold the group's sound together when the line-up kept changing post '75. |

The group that still carries the name "New Riders of The Purple Sage" and appears with Bobby Black now and then, has nothing to do with the original New Riders since NONE of the original members, or even those who came through in the ´70s, is with them anymore. I understand John Dawson was still with them until a couple of years ago until he, too, left. I´ve never heard them and don´t know what kind of material they play now, with Bobby there should certainly be some great moments, but I don´t think it´s appropriate they still call themselves like that. Maybe it would make more sense to call it a NRPS cover band... (no offense intended! Wish I could play in a group like that...)
Too bad I can´t make it to NY, wish I could see that!

For predictable reasons, my memories are hazy and suspect. The only times I saw the Riders were when they were opening for the Dead. Question----was Buddy in the band at any time before the Riders went off on their own tour or would I have seen only Jerry under these circumstances?
an aside---I had the startling experience recently of playing a small NYC room and finding Mr. Cage sitting in front of my steel. I didn't need that!! I couldn't shake this awareness the whole set and I sucked. (He was most gracious).
I'm sure everybody has a good story about the first time they played in the presence of serious Steeldom. Probably make a good thread.
