Bit of Trivia about Mike Johnson.
I had never seen him play except on that talent show on TNN hosted by Charlie Daniels. So it was not easy to determine his talents. But what I did see was great.
When I decided to host the Atlanta show, I felt he would be a good choice of one of the many stars to invite top play on the show. So thru a very dear friend, acting as a go between, I was able to get him to come and perform.
Best decision I EVER made. He literally brought the house down. He is an incredibly fine PSG player. In a word he was "out of this world". His mom lives near Atlanta, and naturally she got to come and see that tear rendering moment when her boy got a standing ovation. Which he really deserved.
That boy can flat pick a Steel guitar. In the words of June Carter on an ole kinescope recording of ET, when she was describing Chet Atkins,
"he picks the FAR out of them strangs"

| mike was everything good about whispering bill anderson songs and arrangements, too. i think he was his bandleader back when i used to see them on tv often. po folks restaurants had steel music in the background by mike also. not to mention the great brad paisley recordings. Mike Johnson was in the house band on TNN's "You Can Be A Star" (it was mostly Bill Anderson's band from what I remember.) It was on 5 nights a week. He's a heck of a player. I met him when the Po Folks were playing in Printer's Alley, (I think it was at The Wheel, but that was 21 years ago and I don't remember exactly.)

Ernie,good info--Now in my Dad's attic is a Lp of Bill Anderson's Po Boys..Fireball Mail is on that album, would that be Mike Johnson?

Carl, you certainly made a good choice in inviting Mike Johnson to the 1997 SGE in Atlanta. From my notes from that show, Mike played Saturday evening, November 29th. His set: "The Other Woman", "You Don't Have Very Far to Go", "Working Man Blues" and "The Old Rugged Cross". I wrote the words "..spine chilling.." beside "Old Rugged Cross".

Yes, I thihk you are right about Weldon now that i have had time to think..good lp too.
got nothing to spin it on and what a scratchy sound that is..compared to CDs today

| I have a Po' Boys album called "That Casual Country Feeling" that has got Sonny on steel and Steve Kramer on guitar. A great album with quite a few originals on it. |

The Po Boy's had four albums. The first with Weldon Myrick. The next three with Sonny Garrish.
Jim Lance played guitar on the first two. Steve Chapman was on the third and the last one had Forum member Gregg Galbraith on guitar, too.
I don't think Mike Johnson did any of them. I think the LP's were all out before Mike started with the band. I think he started with the band before the name was changed to Po Folks. (They added girls...)

| Just for the record, the first time I met Mike was in 1977 and he was playing with Mel Street. Then when Mel decided his career was over, Mike went to work for Jack Green. Then he went to work for Bill Anderson. Great steel player, great person. I don't know if I could play fast if not for Mike. Thank you Mike. Corky. |

| The comment about Daryle Singletary's " That's why I sing this way " CD is correct. This is by far the most enjoyable CD I have heard in the last 3 years. What a bunch of great older tunes, great steel guitar player in Mike Johnson.If you like steel guitar,you'll LOVE this one !! |

When my friend Tim Hamilton heard this great Daryl Singletary CD, he called and played it to me over the phone. Mike Johnson did such a fantastic job and both of us were just blown away but the turn around on I Never Go Around Mirrors. As soon as I hung up the phone, I went and got two copies, one for me and one for a singer I work with. When I delivered the Cd to him, I said learn these songs, maybe I can learn the steel parts. It has been a challenge. Thanks Mike.
