How'd you like to-nights "Poprie". What a bloody disgrace to call that Country. After just a few bars of fiddle & steel, tell me, "are both instruments a thing of the past on the "Poprie". The *&^%$#@! drummer got more air time than the lead players.
Ole Rodger must be spinnin' in his grave with his kid trying to make like a ditty bopper. Just my humble opinion !!!!!

Oh yes, Daddy Miller--the one with roller skates and a skip rope--he sure was country. How much steel did he use? If I recall he used more bass on a song than anything else--something about a trailer for rent. I know he wrote some nice material but a lot of the songs he sang wasn't the traditional country music we liked to hear. Joe |

What irks me most is all the "music time" that is wasted while the cute little be-bop blond explains to us what most of us have known since before SHE was even born. NO discredit to her, she has a job and gets paid for doing it; which she does well, but..
Not only did the drummer boy get most of the video coverage but when the various steel players did attempt to play, the SOUND was as if they were in another room..... In fact, they are placed so far away from the vocalists they might as well be in another studio.
How many years has it been since, Gaylord transformed the Opry from a much loved, much immitated, widely attended, international sensation into this one of a kind amateuer hour? Ever noticed the empty seats on the main floor. After the She-its or whatever they were called....finished their act, the crowd appeared to be just sitting there confused with minimal applause.....this, in contrast to when Allison Crause(sp?) or other blue grass acts perform.
At least to this ole guy, it sure ain't gooder than what it used to be way back when, before all the marvels of digital and all hit.. the scene. |

The Opry has become a total disgrace to what was once traditional Country Music. In fact, I think of it as Pete Fisher's Pop Music Cesspool. Tommy White & Hoot Hester are the 2 best things going out there, and it seems you hardly ever see em anymore. What ever happened to those great country sounds modeled by Ernest Tubb, Jean Shepard, Faron Young, Ray Price, Paycheck & Loretta. . .you know the sound I'm talkin about. Why ain't Darrell Mccall on the Opry! The only good Country music shows here in Nashvegas anymore are at the Nashville Palace where you can hear Mike Sweeney. . .Also Hoot Hester's TimeJumpers Show at the Station Inn where Johnny Cox plays. And I like the Long Holler Jamboree where brother Ron Hogan plays with Bob Payne. What used to be called Country Music has really changed in this town, and it's a cryin shame. I'm glad I no longer work for Gaylord Entertainment where it used to be the premier place to see & hear true Country Music. You can hear more country music at one of my shows with the Beaver Creek Band. Alright boys, my force-field is activated - Sheilds are up. . .now let the flames begin!

Nick--It is true that the Opry is changing--for better or worse I won't comment. If and when I make the trip to Nashville it won't be just to see the Opry. It would be a 650 mile trip and I don't think it would be worth going to Nashville just for the Opry. You mentioned other places where I could hear good country music--that sounds like it would be more fun and there would be a chance for some dancing. It would be nice to hear you play with the Beaver Creek Band and if you are ever in Western New York you would be able to hear my band, the Willow Creek Band! We play new country but I try to keep it traditional with my steel . If the Opry changes so much that it moves out of Nashville what difference will it make? The Dodgers moved out of Brooklyn but that didn't mean the end for baseball--country music will go on and on. Joe |

If it's all about money why would they make more money on the new country, than the traditional country music.? Is it that more people like the new stuff, and spend more money on it. Maybe the people who really are true traditionalists have all the old records of their favorite artists and wouldn't buy the new CDs anyway . Joe |

The chopped up for CMT version of the Opry is a far cry from what what I hear on the radio after the TV stuff is over. The junk they put on the is not the Opry, nor are the majority of the performers Opry members. It's just a showcase for urban warmed over rock and roll that 25 year old radio program directors try to pass off to old guys like me as Country. Too bad guys, I'm not listening, so I can't support your sponsors. |

When I saw the Opry last nite, I knew it would be a hot topic. Couldn't wait to hear the remarks. I especially enjoyed yours Ray Montee. As always you were right on.
It amazes me that technology to produce and record sound is vastly improved, and the musicians as a whole are better. YET the music keeps getting worse. Most of the songs being written now days are the most forgetable I've ever heard. The kicker is that when I hear a REAL country band do some of them, they sound pretty good. :-)

The sad situation is some viewers see the cmt show and get the idea that what they see is real country music-what adisaster! On the 6:30 segment, Connie Smith did her usual great job, believe she said Johnny Cox was playing steel ( fellows, does he work with her on a regular basis) and JimmyDickens' steel player did his usual sound job. |

Gentlemen, I think the CMT TV spot probably goes to the highest biding record label. I agree that most of what you hear on the televised portion is not what many of us grew up with. If you will notice, the country venue has been used by many famous entertainers to get seen and heard and as soon as they become famous, their circle of friends change along with their music. It's a way of getting free advertisement and exposure. I think we are witnessing the beginning of the end of an era. Country music has been a journey that began in the 20's and 30's and carried into the early 80's. The de-ruralization of America has almost been accomplished and today's audiences have little or no connection with that way of life. There are a few pockets of resistance left however, Bluegrass being one of those. There are other options such as conventions, musician reunions, country Jam sessions, etc. I say find one of those and get into it! The Opry will live or die by the paying public. |

Mike,
I knew I'd hear from you. I like watching the Opry on T.V. Pete has brought diversity, he gives new artist a chance to be seen.
Maybe, that's a bad thing to you. I'm thankful for new music. Theresa

Just read these post and thought I'd put in my two cents worth.
It makes me angry and very sad to watch the opry and other shows, like the cma awards and all the other shows that call themselves country music.
The opry is only surviving on what it was and not what it is today. Haven't talked to anybody from this area that has been that enjoyed the Opry. They wanted to see Porter and Little Jimmy Dickens and such and got stuck with Tritt and a couple other rock singers that scream instead of singing. One guy even had green hair a friend of mine said.
This (so called) country music of today has no tune, words very seldom make sense and most of the artist can't sing. Gene Watson can sing circles around every one of them.
As far the steels and fiddles, well, most road bands have completely done away with them. Reba,Gatlins, Tracie Lawrence and others just to name a few.
Here's what us steelers and fiddlers should do. Never again play for the suckers. I mean in Nashville, Vegas, studios and anywhere they want to perform. Then maybe, just maybe their music will go off to some other catagory and will never disgrace country music again.
Sorry for all the raving. It just makes me mad.---Henry |

Well millions and millions of folks are buying all this music "they" call country now.
It is our own fault.
WE are not educating the young folks(next generation) about(well pretty much everything)...but certainly not what Country Music really is and about. Since they don't know and can't make up their own minds.....then they are left to be swept away with the shiney beeds that the record companys and Producers are danglin' in front of their ignorant eyes.
Ignorant meaning...."they do not know".....and therefore are subject to anything and anybody that wants to show them and lead them down any path they want to. This is what the Majority wants to hear and buy......and just saying to a kid..."don't put your hand on that stove"...will not prevent them from doing it. Remember how to Teach??? Remember how to Educate??? Well get going.....eventhough it's not politically correct to teach our young ones anymore......."Do it anyways"!!!!

Mike,
You know I'd never avoid you!
I think young or old will choose who they what to listen to. It's a hard call, kids rebell and listen to what they want.
I myself did growing up. I never agreed with my brother or parents.
If one artist is the reason for watching the T.V. Portion, so be it! Good for the Opry and everyone! Theresa |
