... until i got his Soulful Steel CD from the Steel Forum catalog. Very smooth and soulful, indeed! I'm only up to cut 5 as i type. I like how he trades off solos with himself (steel to steel). Most steel CDs don't have this. Sounds great! BTW, b0b shipped it standard first class on 4/10 and it got to me (coast to coast) today. That includes the weekend! That's fast! |

Eric, I went to Bobbe's SGN business and was very blessed and fortunate to catch him playing and Hoss I'm tellin ya He is absolutely fantastic. He was playing like I breathe,NATURALLY. It was if it was his 2nd nature. Ihave never seen anybody play that smooth.Just like gliding and sliding on ice. IF I ever come close to playing like that I'll quit the tire plant.BUT it looks I mite have to stay at the plant at least TWO craeers worth. If you hear Bobbe's playin some where, run or fly (QUACK QUACK) to get there, it's worth the effort. Kenny Ray Lynnville, Ky. Home of the Broke and the Brave |

Bobbe's self-deprecating humor can make one forget what a great player he is. On thumb-style steel, no one can touch him.
My favorite Seymour recording is the "Live" CD he recorded live at one of those Chet Atkins shows (you can buy it from Forum catalog to support the Forum - http://b0b.com/products/music2.html#seymourlive ). Just think of the pressure of having Chet Atkins sitting on the front row and room full of other guitarists watching as you try to record a live steel guitar instrumental album!
Even Monster Rocker Eddie Van Halen was running around on stage teasing Bobbe during his performance.
It is a great recording in itself, but to consider the pressure of that particular audience, it is just mind blowing how he pulled it off so well.

Yes, most positively, my humor has cost me a great career in music. Being cursed with such a horrifying sense of humor has caused me a life of agony and despair. I could have been president, A true world leader! A great brain surgen,A famous lawyer, I could have been anything I ever wanted to be, I could have been where Maurice Anderson is today, If only I hadn't been cursed with this blasphamus, despicable, sense of humor that has caused me to be a true outcast, NEVER to ever be in the steel guitar hall of fame.I'm darn lucky I was born rich!!
Yes Frank Estes, you are SOOO correct!! Folks do not, nor will ever know how truly great I think I am, ALL BECAUSE OF MY HUMOR! Dratt! Here I am, 29 years old and my career is damaged beyond repair, just because of my badly distorted humor. LET THIS BE A WARNING! Don't ever try to be funny! Not if you wish to have a serious career in steel guitar! Look at the guys that have NO humor that are doing great, Paul F., MSAnderson, John H., Les Campbell,bOb Lee, Bill Clinton, Mike Weirauch, Smiley R.-----sorry, forget the last two, anyway, a great career is NOT to be laughed at! Hey! Where is my hall of fame nomination anyway? (there's that humor again!)

Hey Bobbe
Why are all these guys razzing you about " The Almighty Swineatone" . Don't they know that if it had not been for Rufus Thibodeaux bringing that " Swinette"playing fool with him to "The Grand Old Opry" to backup Jimmy C Newman on Cry Cry Darling no one would have ever known about this Louisiana folk instrument. Only Joel Sonnier & his Martin Cajun Accordion has done more to perpetuate the Cajun Folk sound. You Guys only made all the much need improvements( so as it would not be so hard on the front teeth)& made more pleasing to the eyes.Nothing in my part of the USA can Stir the soul as a slow soulful version of "Jole' Blonde"or"I Past In Front Your Door"

Thank you Dan, I didn't even know what a "swine-a-tone" was and had no idea it was a much revered musical instrument in the Cajon community! Guess I'll have to put a pedal on one! (or start pedaling them from here!)
P.S. I have heard you play and you are a MONSTER!

I had never heard much of Bobbe's playing either, until I made it a point to stop at Scotty's on my way thru St.Louis the other day. I bought the Live CD. Bobbe, that is just WAY too good. Bobbe, did you play on "The Stan Hitchcock Show" broadcast from Point Lookout MO in the late 70's, early 80's? That was a great local show.

Doug, yes, I worked with Stan Hitchcock for several years, we taped the show you are talking about at "The School of the Ozarks" in Branson Mo.(late '79) These tapes were done at great expense by the husband (Bill) of the famous Harliquin Books writer, Janet Daily.
We taped Many shows there that were syndicated all over the world . Stan and I then started "Music Village" in Hendersonville TN. ajacent to Conways, "Twitty City". I was band leader there for two years. ('83-'84) We booked every great artist in the country field while we were there. Great days, but these are better!

Bobbe,
I do remember all the Janet Daily commercials. Weren't Larry Smith and Elaine Fender also in the band on that show? They have a music store in Stockton, MO now. Thanks for your good work on the show, I was just getting hooked on country and starting to play in bands at that time. BTW, you were described today at the Zum shop as possibly one of the most under rated players! A pretty nice compliment considering where it came from.

Well, there are some good things said around "Steel Guitar Nashville" about the Zum shop also. Bruce is beyond discription, his work, honesty, personality etc., -------- I guess I'm pretty well known , but not as a steel player,I don't know what I'm known for the most,----------- running my mouth I 'spose.
Bobbe---( and thank you ) |

It still gets priority in my single disc player. The first half of the 18 cut disc is classic pedal steel. The second half is modern Pop standards. There's something to be said about a guy who can make you like tunes you never liked before. On Broadway is a good example(Who played lead guitar?). I continue to be amazed at the volume of notes Bobbe pulls out of his steel. Just when you think he's done another subtle gliss slips in. There is a lot of work and passion put into this CD, and i appreciate it. This CD should be available nationwide in the Wal-Marts and such. There are NO steel CDs in the chain stores and this one could clean up, IMO. [This message was edited by erik on 02 May 2002 at 02:30 AM.] |

Thank you Erik, I did have one out once(Happy Steel Guitar on GRT records) that made it to the big chain stores, and yes, it did sell well but in this day and time I don't think I could get this deal again. Thank you very much for the nice words.
