Just signed on as a member this week. I'm a long time guitar player (Chet Atkins style) as well as bass and piano. I have always loved the steel sound and got a Carter Starter as a gift from my wife and here I go.

Welcome Joey,
I’ve been visiting this forum for a couple of years now, and I can’t tell you how valuable it has been for me. For example, here are some of the more important things I’ve learned:

1. Sho~Buds are the most beautiful guitars ever built.
2. People who use the Day set up have more soul than people who use the Emmons set up.
3. You can never have enough knee levers.
4. Black pedal steels sound better than purple ones.
5. I’ve seen the future of steel guitar, and his name is Robert Randolph.
6. And, never ever bring up Jerry Garcia on this forum (oops, I just did).

Good luck,
Pete

Hi Joey, welcome to the Forum! You are going to enjoy it here.

In case you didn't already know, your online instructor Freeman Cowgar authored one of the earliest E9th instruction booklets ever printed. It's been out of print for many years but he still has a copy or two lying around his shop. Real simple material designed with a very basic setup in mind. Freeman is a fellow northern Michigander and a friend of mine. Not a lightening fast player but very accurate, he's got soul like Ray Charles and "tone to the bone". He of course builds the Cougar line of steel guitars and has built and sold several thousand steels down through the years. If you're ever up this way he would love to have you stop in and pay him a visit. Thanks for mentioning his course.

Welcome Joey,
The Forum is the place to learn a lot of the little things that all add up to getting your tone and sound down. Don't be afraid to ask any question, everyone on here had to learn it sometime.
