To me, the only good country on the opry is my friends Tommy White and Hoot Hester. I hope this isn't taken in the wrong way. Just my 2 cents.

What Dr. Jeffreys said about receiving E-Mail from Charlie Prides crew, I believe this Forum is a lot bigger and read by a lot more people than any of us realize.

It's really not , never has been , about the music or the caliber of Leon Rhodes or musicians or the weekly line-up. Larry is right on the button here. This is about turning the show into cash flow and to maintain the sponsors. The new acts attract a certain audience and the "Geezers" attract a different group of folks. It's sorta like a major company ( like the one I work for ) offering a new product but still has blow-out sales promotions on the old ones. Charlie and Porter are kinda like a sales promotion to maintain the old school folks ( 'cause they got lots of money ) and the new acts get the benefit of playing in front of that audience and maybe will strike a good chord and sell another CD.

We are going to the Opry this weekend and when I looked at the line-up I didn't recognize any names , BUT, Porter is listed as the emcee. We'll be front row center, you'll recognize me, I'll be wearing sneakers...

I'm a sales guy with a major company, I have had some incredible years, but as soon as I have an off year or two they will push me aside for some new blood who they hope will out-perform me and my 30 years experience !The new guy( or gal ) will be expected to learn overnight what I learned in 30 years..same deal as the Opry..This is real common now and eventually the company I work for ( like many now ) will have employees with tenure of 2 to 3 years which is really what the goal is, less salary, no retirement, minimum benefit payout , no severance etc. More cash for the stock holders ,execs...

Jimmie,
Gregg and I remember meeting you You played steel. I believe Gordon Lowry was playing fiddle. Good show!
Nice to know Paul gave a lesson too!
People never agree all the time. I miss the one's before, but the new ones are doing us proud when I watch and listen to the TV Portion! JMO,Theresa

In respsonse to Martin Weenick's observation: I think the Forum is like Talk Radio, and Ham Radio: The participants are a mere fraction of those listening. WA4PEM---Hugh

How long will they keep Tommy and Hoot if they only play 8-10 songs a weekend?

Tommy and Hoot would be out of the opry so fast it would make your head spin, if they only say "NO" once.Thay have to play what they`ve been told to play. Those people "up there" can care or less for the steel guitar or fiddle, what they care about is cold cash. They gived 1 1/2 second to George Jones to sing his song on CMA,so that show`s us how much they care about music. And message for Kevin,if you have a chanse pal,put a "Charlie Pride at a Panther Hall live"on your CD and get a little education. And then when you go next time to the Tim Mcgrowe concert pay little attention to his singing (sharp?flat? nobody knows )and not to all these tit`s around you.You need to eat much more cherios to talk like that about Mr.Pride.Just friendly tip.

Well, I'm new and already going to get in trouble but .... Porter W may sound like a strangled or strangling goose to you, but there are a lot of people out there who really love him. And besides, he's made a lot more money than I have. Who am I to judge him. Same with the other older people on the GOO. If you don't like it, that's what the remote is for. Use it!!! The one thing I have learned (if nothing else) is that you can't please all the people all the time.

One of the parties, partly responsble for getting the staff band fired,is a senior member of the present staff band. He,also, tried,I was told,to get the Carol Lee Singers fired,to get one of his "friends" in there. Don't ask!! I take the 5th!

Smiley, my boy!! I know EXACTLY of whom you speak! - and I've known it for a LONG TIME!! Why, I'll bet that knife in Weldons back still has his fingerprints on it. When I spoke of "dirty $--t", this is exactly what I meant. Surprisingly, although it has been sometime since Weldon "got it", you're the first "line musician" that I've ever heard speak so closely about what actually happened. I'll talk about most anything right up to the point of mentioning names, and maybe good sense, or lack of fortitude overtakes me! .Got to back T.O. on a few shows a couple of years ago. He brought Gene Breeden up with him. What great guys to work with/for! Oh and RETCOP - me 'n' you are "fishin' in the same hole"! Later... Jimmie the "Old Geezer"

I am not going to leave Smiley hanging out on a limb on this one. Smiley knows the story and so do I. The friend is also the senior's girl friend. If I ever see Mr. Senior on the side of the road with a flat tire, I probably won't stop.
Actually Jimmy,Weldon saw it coming before anyone else did and told Pete Fisher to stick it before he got stuck with the perverbial knife in the back.

rettcop88,
Weldon Myrick chose to leave the Opry staff band on his own free will. Weldon was not fired.
Yes, I gratefully filled Weldon's honorable former position and with Weldon's blessing I might add, as we are best of friends and have been for more than 25 years.

Damir,
At no time does anyone dictate what we in the Grand Ole Opry staff band play or how we perform.
Common sense tells us as professionals what our objectives and creative bottom lines are.
My best,
T.W.

Robert Rogers,
Thank you so much for your nice compliments.
They are very much appreciated and I will pass them along. Thanks again.
T.W.

Myron, Thanks for being so polite. I'm not a big PW fan ... I know what I've put up with for a good many years and I just meant that there are people who love him. Personally, I wouldn't hire him or some of the "old timers" on my bandstand. I agree with you that we have to make room for the new. You need to lead, follow or get the he__ out of the way.

Getting back to the side comments on hosts.
Maby Porter Wagner, Jeanie Sealy, and Bill Anderson are not the strongest in vocals, they still do a great job as MC and study
their country music past and present.

Also Little Jimmy Dickins despite the same old jokes.

It's a skill to follow cues and account for last second problems etc.

By the way my main objective in posting the opry list is so that the folks here know who
to watch for be it MC vocalest or sideman.
Judging from reponses from Dave Robbins and Donna Hamlett it is appriciated.

Live TV music appearences are fading so we should appriciate what there is.
