I e-mailed to enquire about their New lap steel strings and string guages. They were very quick to reply. When I spoke to marketing directer on the phone she was very friendly and wanted to help me any way she could. She even waved the shipping on my order. I do own an Asher Electro Hawaiian but I got it second Hand. They asked me if I would give a testamoial, serial #,audio clip,Web link to site if I had one. They also have a teachers directory under links .
They are very enthusiastic about helping promote steel and finding out what musicians want. Badass guitars and good people-Dave |

Yeah, I can confirm that. I've dealt with several nice and helpful luthiers/dealers, but Bill and Jessica Asher is in a class all of their own. Their service is exceptional.

Steiner,
I really enjoyed your clips on their Site.
That's my favorite Beach Boys Song. I remember in a previous post you said you took out the horseshoe pickup and opted for something else.Any updates? I did speak to Jessica .I wasn't aware was Bill's wife.
I love my Asher Lap.The pickups allow so many tone options and the guitar itself sustains for days. Have you tried the Asher Lap steel strings? What guage strings do you use?(and Tunings)
I have been using Dobro open G and open D
Thanks-Dave |

Yeah, I wasn't all that happy with the horseshoe, it wasn't the right pickup for that guitar IMO, too bright. Like you, I also bought mine used, and this is why their service amazed me so,- Bill made me a custom P-90 (with extra plate to cover the big hole from the horseshoe) plus a new bobbin for the horseshoe. Sent me both, plus the original Rickenbacker bobbin for the horseshoe, so I could mix and match and try out what I liked the best. Then I simply returned the one I didn't want (I kept the P-90, it has exactly the sound I was looking for in that guitar).
That's a lot more than I could have asked for, considering I didn't buy the guitar from them. They have this ability to make you feel as if you're their only customer, and unfortunately that's a quality that's becoming rare in todays corporate world.
I've tried their strings for both electric and acoustic lap steel, and I didn't quite agree with their choice of gauges,- the electric strings are a bit too heavy while the acoustic strings are too light. But that's according to my preferences, hopefully others will enjoy them more.
I usually keep the Asher in open-D (with variations), and have used the Jagwire 'E tuning' string from b0b for a year or so (with a .056 for the 6th string). I find they work well for open-D on a 25" scale steel like the Asher.

I had the pleasure of playing David's Asher one evening , and was FLOORED by the quality of the intrument, and was just as impressed with the tone ....The pickup's as I remember looked very similar to P-90's with a marbley looking plastic used on the body of the pickups...
They were very clean and very efficient and the steel played itself ... They are pricey , but worth every penny ......Jim |
