As mentioned in Ron's earlier posting, Dick Roberts was apparently Spade Cooley's first steel player. Does anyone have any information on him they'd like to share? Anybody know what kind of steel guitar he played or the tuning(s) he used?

The only thing I found was a brief mention of him in this page about accordionist Pedro DePaul, but apparently he was better known as a banjo player (he was a member of the Banjo Kings with Red Roundtree).

I received the following email from Mike Gross:

I noticed your post on Dick Roberts on the Forum and wanted to let you know that he replaced Noel Boggs in the Hank Penny band when Noel joined Bob Wills and was featured on some wonderful 1945 and 1946 recordings with the Hank Penny band. I have played many of these on my "Swingin' West" radio show. He was replaced in the Penny band in 1946 by Ralph Miele.
