Hey everyone, I have a new DerbySteel guitar that dad gave me. IT's a 10 string lap steel. I've been searching for instructional books, but most are for 6 strings. Any help? Jaynette (Stepp) Mondie

congrats on your steel, your dad gave me one last year, a black 10 string!
It's very hard to find some material for it, you should ask Billy Robinson. Or Ricky Davis.

There are 2 videos for 8 string lapsteel (non pedal steel) that are very good.
Cindy Cashdollar has a 2 video set teaching in C6th. Good balance of exercises and playing techniques.

Thanx Johan & Ron, UR right about trying to find material on a 10 string lap, my husband has been looking forever on the internet. I guess he'll just have to take 2 strings off. Or even better, Gary's trying to talk me into a pedal. He says he can find all kinds of info on those. But Alas, I promised dad I'd learn one song on it, then I could graduate to a pedal steel. My husband has the knowledge of a standard guitar he's been playing for almost 40yrs. so he can help me with chords, but he hasn't a clue of a C-6 tuning. Much less having 4 extra strings. He did get me picking on the bottom 4 strings & sliding the bar up 5&7 more frets. HE thinks I need some basic lessons being I'm new to all of this. I'm determined though. I seen Billy at dad's party last year, nice man. But I don't know how to reach him. Guess I'll have to talk to dad. He uses just a little different tuning than the regular C-6. Moves all his strings up, and adds a different key at the bottom. Once again, thanx for the reply, & JOhan, dad says hi, & mom does too..Jaynette

You can use any non-pedal instruction course as long it is designed for your basic tuning. Just renumber the strings either in your mind or on the page to match up with where those same strings are on your guitar. I've done this a lot for E9 and C6 instruction written for a D-10, both on my D-12 and my 13 string Universal.
Also, if you're tuning to the same C6 as a pedal steel, take a look at some of the pedal steel C6 instruction material. Most of it only uses the pedals minimally.
