I am looking for a good squareneck dobro to learn on. I am looking for something like a Regal 45 or a Gold Tone. I would like something not terribly expensive, but also something that I can keep and play for a while.

I don't know how good they are, but I see them all the time on eBay for $200 or less.

I recently tried out a Regal RD-52 'Black Lightning' at a local music store. I own and play several high-end resophonics, but this is the best thing I have played in a lower price instrument as far as the overall quality and sound. You should be able to find these discounted at around $500.
If you buy too cheap of an instrument, to 'learn on', you can easily get discouraged and quit. The better instruments make better music.
Thanx,
Jim |

I've been playing Dobro for 25 years (mine's an old OMI "Huntington Beach" all-mahogany one with lyre inlays on the neck - I also removed the glue from the cone. It's a really nice one and stands up well against "real" Beards, RQ jones...don't know about Scheerhorns, haven't played one).
The Regal RD52 is about the best "bang for the buck" you can find, along with the Beard/Gold Tone models. Go cheaper, and you'll end up hating the tone and quit...that's what happens to most beginners. I wish there were NO cheapo dobros, because they just frustrate beginners. It's not an easy instrument to learn for someone with no lap-slide experience, and cheapo instruments just drive new players away.
Also check out Liberty Guitars. Bill makes some great stuff at fantastic prices, and gives great service as well. |
