Hi SGF:
Currently on eBay is offered a 1954 original photo of Ray Price standing next to a young lady; and behind the lady appears to be a very young Buddy Emmons.
The eBay auction's URL is:
http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1495837562
Here's the photo from the eBay auction which is labeled as an "eBay Sample", so I assume it's OK to post it here.
Was Emmons with Price in 1954? Is that him in the photo?
If so, it's a great shot and should be of interest to all Buddy Emmons and Ray Price fans.
Better yet, make the eBay seller happy and put a bid on this original photo.
Regards,
Al Gershen

It does look kinda like Buddy. I know in 57 or 58 he was with Little Jimmy Dickens. That's when I met him. At the Bostonia Ball Room in El Cajon Calif.

Al, It states in the ad on eBay that the sheet music is from 1954 and the photo is from 1963.

Hi Tommy Minniear:
You're correct. The auction description describes the photo: "OF RAY PRICE AT THE JIMMY RODGERS MEMORIAL FESTIVAL IN MERIDIAN, MISSISSIPPI IN 1963..."
I was looking at the auction title which is, "RAY PRICE SHEET MUSIC & UNCIRC PHOTO 1954."
Dates aside, it's a very good photo.
Thank for correcting me.
Regards,
Al Gershen

It is indeed the Big E. He was young, but it's him. The earliest it would be from is 1955, when he came to town with Little Jimmy Dickens.

Ray must have been on the same show with Ernest Tubb because the shirt I'm wearing is from ET's band. I was probably hanging around Ray hoping he would hire me. Looks like I picked a bad time for him to notice. |

So it's later than '55. Buddy started with ET in '57. Thanks for popping in there, E!

This is really kind of funny because I looked at the picture, and thought, “Yea, that really does look like Buddy, and yea that is Ray, and yea that is some chick.” On the other hand, I read some of the later posts about the picture being from the early ‘60’s. I don’t remember Buddy, or the Cherokee Cowboys wearing “hats”. Heck, Ray didn’t even wear one by that time. This was even before the “Derby” days! I thought, THAT is an “ET” Hat!!! That picture had to be sometime from the late ‘50’s. So I looked at the lady again ( ), and thought Yea, defiantly late “50”’s.
Buddy, I once again believe you are correct. While I have always found your “timing” to be impeccable, it does seem that Ray’s attention was directed somewhere “other” that hiring a steel player. Oh well, maybe is was not an opportune moment for a job interview!!

Back then everyone had to be in uniform which usually was either: black pants, black tie & white shirt...or red pants, red tie & white shirt. Hats were optional depending whether everyone had one....but it had to be white!. (Black hats & beards came years later!) www.genejones.com [This message was edited by Gene Jones on 14 December 2001 at 11:09 AM.] |

It's too bad that almost nobody dresses up for shows anymore. Or regular life either, for that matter. Watch the Opry every week, at least half of the acts look like they just came from a backyard barbeque - t-shirts and baseball caps. Have a little pride, and respect! |

I've played with two different bands the last couple of months. Both of them have band "shirts" and ask the members to wear black pants. Looks a helluva lot better.

In the book "Fender, The Inside Story", by Forrest White, there is a picture of Buddy wearing a hat like the one he has on with Jimmy Day. Also according to the book, when you worked ET, you wore a hat. For a brief time when Billy Parker was the front man for ET, they got away from the hats.
