I have been watching re-runs of the old 1980's tv show "Simon and Simon" and it has some great slide guitar playing and steel playing in the background. Does anyone know who was playing slide and steel for the background music of this show? I was thinking it might be Ry Cooder on slide and JD Manness on steel but that is just an un-educated guess.

I remember reading the answer to this years ago... but I forget
I know that it wasn't Cooder, but one of the LA TV session specialists...

Most of the bluesy distorted slide work was 6 string guitar, and most of the slide guitar solos were played by my favorite guitar player, Dean Parks. For example, Dean played the melody of the theme song that you hear at the beginning of the show. Also the great John Goux and George Doering did lots of slide guitar solos, electric and acoustic. The pedal steel stuff is me on almost every show, and it was clean sounding chords with some pitch and delay effects.

While we're in that vein, my 16 month old Grandaughter is a "Blues Clues" nut. Does anyone know who played steel on those videos? Was that you Earnest? Not a lot of melody, but lots of fills and effects.

Ernest, thanks for the info. I will have to pay more attention to Dean Parks, he does some great stuff on that show. The steel sounds great too! On a different subject, do you know a steel player in the Los Angeles area named Bruce Thomas? He is a friend of mine from way back and I haven't heard hide nor hair from him in quite sometime.

Simon and Simon used to be my favorite show. Where has the time gone? I haven't seen that since it went off the air. That was one of my favorite theme tunes too... along with Rockford Files.

Darvin, Some of the Blues Clues stuff was done by John Widgren who is on the Forum, He is a great player who works all the time in NYC but lives in Connecticut. He could probably tell you who plays also for that show.

John played at the PSGA show this November and brought the house down with his Western Swing Band, 'The Western Caravan'
