The only reason I am responding is Paul's reference to not playing golf or whatever to become successful. The first place I heard that idea was from an interview with Bobby Black after he returned from Nashville in the late seventies. Maybe it was in Guitar Player but they asked him about his studio experience and he said something about Pete Drake telling him to be more sociable out of studio with the other musicians. Since then I have heard the "Golf" reference many times in many versions. Maybe someone could look it up....P.D |

Slick, what do you mean, attempt at being funny? You are hillarious, as are many others. Jody, Retcop, Les Campbell,Wierach, you know who you are, this is a funny, funny place. And slightly educational, every couple months! Is this a great forum or what!
Bobbe-----(yes Earl Erb, I think your the greatest guitar player in the world, but then theres Greg Galbreath and, and and, just kidding Earl,Youv'e been at the top my
play list for 32 years!)

Hey Jody, just one of the best dam guitar players that ever hit the streets of Nashville. I've been on this forum for almost two years and you have to ask? |
Earl
You can only make nickels, Dimes and quarters on the streets of Nashburg.

What a great new topic! I have been playing steel for almost 2 years and I posted a topic regarding choking up under the gun. Paul Franklin responded ,that he thought I was a good player and he had never heard me. I knew with that statement that he is a great human being. I front a band in Iowa, mostly western swing, ballrooms and have for about 17 years. I had a steel player by the name of Don Goettsch who has since passed on, and was a great friend to many musicians. He said that he stayed with this band the longest of any other band he has ever played with. When I asked why, he said,"..there aren't any a$$holes in this group. That has been my philosophy, no attitudes or pomposity (spelling) We are busy and successful and still friends.
Thanks for being a great bunch of human beings. Hey Paul, I'm having a jam session August 18th at Troy Mills Iowa. Come on up! I'll bet you never played there before.

In terms of what road steel players versus session players, here's what I know. I have never worked a union master session in Nashville, but the scale gigs I used to do in LA were somewhere around $250 for a 3 hour session. I imagine the Nashville scale has to be higher than that now (come on, you Nashville guys, break out the union book and let us know). If you do 3 double scale gigs a day 5 days a week, you would make some serious money. But no $500k a year, I would imagine. The top session guitar player here in Seattle makes about $80-100k a year, but he does sequencing, arranging, and a lot of turd polishing. I would imagine that would be a good income for most session players in any city (forget the A++ team). I make literally dozens of dollars a week in sessions.....
In terms of road gigs, it's all over the map. Ron Wood has got to make a lot more than a million a year whenever he drags his steel on the road with the Rolling Stones. When I was in Nashville in the late 70s, I was lucky to get $100 a night with an opry act. I have heard that it isn't a whole lot better these days. I would expect that most road players earn somewhere between that amount. I doubt whether many Nashville road players earn more than a couple of grand a week on the road, but I could be wrong.
Anybody who does this thing for the money needs to have his head examined, anyway.
