On my last topic about building lapsteels I mentioned that I wanted to build some steels that are close to some of the classics in designs.
I need your help. I'm interested in obtaining good pictures of classic steels, dimensions, detailed drawings if possible, and tracings of their body shapes. If it's not too much to ask, how about a little what you like/don't like about your favorite model.
I plan on making a steel similar to a stringmaster which I would offer in several # of necks and configurations, a frying pan style, another Ricky like the Panda ones, maybe an old Gibson or two, maybe a Champion and maybe a National New Yorker or similar style. Of course, I have a few designs that I came up with that are influenced by some classic but are still original.
I hope to make several scale lengths available and I plan on leaving space behind the bridges so Palm Pedals can be added.
*******ANY HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED******
You can email me your stuff or you can email and ask for my mailing address and send me some stuff.
Thanks for your help and your words of encouragement and discouragement too!!!
Keep steelin'
Casey

I think you need to pick up a copy of Andy Volk's book on lap steel. I see them listed on ebay all the time. This will give you a starting point. Good luck! |

I know what the classics look like...I just want to get the right shape, size and feel to them so they're like playing your old favorites...only newer.

I might suggest that one way to go about this would be to buy some of the classic designs on ebay, which can then resell to recoop your investment. In certain situations, if you just need to body, you could pick up some laps in need of repair very cheaply. |
