I have a gibson BR-4 almost identical to the BR-6. How do I remove the knobs? They are clear plastic w/o any set screw? I'm afraid to pry them off. Thanks, Ron |

Sometimes they stick pretty good. Oft times you just have to get under them with something and pry them off (gently now!)

If these are the clear lucite gold or amber ones, try to pry inside near the split-pot-shaft so as not to chip the gold paint on the underside of the skirt. or distort the skirt amd uglify it forever.
Usally just getting a good even grip while trying to sorta "dig" finretips/nails under the knob and pulling does it without tools. |

I usually get a couple of popsicle sticks- I keep 'em in my toolbox just for this- and take a small prybar (with a screwdriver handle) and use the toothpicks to protect the body. You risk destroying the knobs, but if they are old or brittle they may break getting them off anyway. You can also try putting a drop of oil on the pot shaft near the knob and letting the guitar sit face down for a couple of hours; Lastly I have tried using a blow dryer on hot and heating the knobs a bit to make them more pliable. Once again, protect the surface finish before doing that. |

It seems that "Pulling Knobs" isn't a normal procedure for steel players ?

What we Les Paul players do is to take a piece of shoelace and wrap them a few times around the pot shaft below the knobs, then pull up. They usually come flying off. I know one guy who use two spoons on either side of the knob. Push on the handles and the knob comes up. You could put a scrap of leather under the spoon to prevent scratching the guitar. |

Sorry for the topic drift, but...
Hey Paul. It's Richard. I talked to Kathy a while back and got your email info but it would never go through. It would be great to talk to you again.
Oops.. Forgot that I could email him direct from here.
