James: If you do a search you'll find the topic of extended versions of the Leavitt tuning has been discussed here a number of times before. I use the tuning on my 7-string guitars with a C on the 7th string (C-C#-E-G-Bb-C-D). Other people have suggested a number of alternatives. The only 8-string version I've tried was the same tuning listed above, but with an F above the high D. That seemed to present some interesting possibilities, but I never explored it in much depth.

I would shoot an e-mail over to Mike Ihde with that ques. I remember talking with him about extended versions (7 & 8 string)of the tuning. I beleive Roy thomson and Rick Alexander have variation also. Hope that helps - Dave
Mike sells some nice arrangements of standards in the 6 string leavitt tuning

James-- last I heard, Mike Ihde's preferred 8-string Leavitt tuning added two lower notes: Eb for the 7th string and low C for the 8th. -Steve

I was told by a regular attendee of the HSGA
annual convention Joliet, Illinois that
a Hawaiian Steel Artist played a whole set
using an extended version of the Leavitt.
I believe it was the 2004 convention.

He put an "E" in the first position followed by D--C--Bb--G--E--C#. The Hawaiians like
to tune the first string E for most tunings.
So I am told.
I forget how he tuned the last or eight string. There may not have been an 8th
string?

Gerald Ross, can you offer any further information or clarification on this?

Thanks so much.

Roy
