I did a seach in the ol' achives for latin steel and it came up blank. I was just wondering if anyone out there knows if it's been tried before, and if so who the players are/were? that is,(I guess I've been listening to my Machito record again), it seems like it could be in the same keeping as Bob Wills or Count Basie. Any info is appreciated . . .Tanx in advance. |

My first ever gig in front of people on my Sho-Bud,
I played Black Orpheou, and One Note Samba.
And the 1st original piece I recorded was a latin blues.
See here.

Latin and steel are a nice fit IMHO
There are several good steel latin tunes in the forum store, I just am not near my collection to give you specifics right now...[This message was edited by David L. Donald on 10 March 2005 at 05:37 AM.] |

I'm not aware of any full-length albums of latin steel, though various steel players have recorded a latin tune here or there. Doug Jernigan's "One Note Samba" comes to mind, as does Chalker's (and a lot of people's) "Girl from Ipanema", and Franklin (and others') "Wave". I recorded "Desafinado", and will have Parker's "My Little Suede Shoes" on my next CD. Of course all of this is Brazilian-influenced jazz, not "Afro-Cuban" or any of the many other types of "latin" music. It's a big continent down there! Not big band but.....Ry Cooder has been playing steel with some Afro-Cuban artists. I saw him live with the Buena Vista Social Club back in the 90's.
He also plays some cool retro Afro-Cuban pop oriented type stuff on an album with Manuel Galban called Mambo Sinuendo. |

thanks everyone, hmmm brazilian steel that must be cool. "Vatican latin" LOL. . . never heard that term before,(can I steal/steel it?). Think I'll do a lil experimenting myself, to see what I can come up with, it'll be a challenge on a C6th neck, tho I've been working with the minor tonality, and getting my 2/5 chords together . . .Thanks again all!! |

Howard, make the second note a major 7th and you're ready for big-time samba. |
