Custom Triple 8 arrived: now what?

My Fender Triple 8 just arrived! The strings seem about 52 years old as well, but I was able to tune it up to an E tuning and it sounds great. Can't wait to hear it with new strings and through the Nashville 1000 which comes tomorrow.

So a couple of questions.

I plan on tuning one nect Derrick Campbell's E tuning and the second neck either A6 or C6. That leaves the 3rd neck. Any suggestions. Mostly I'll be playing Jazz, rock, blues. I'd like something that offered the most options for jazz chords.

Second, care and feeding: should I be oiling the tuning peg area? I assume the wood can handle any type of typical wood polish.

Congrats on what must be a great guitar; I envy you! As to cleaning and care, what you do next depends on the condition of the instrument. Is the finish really bad? How crusty are the tuning pans and tuners? If the metal parts need serious cleaning, take a toothbrush and some 409, disassemble them and scrub them thoroughly. oil them with any kind of machine oil, a little dab'll do ya. If the finish is really dirty use some Murphy's Oil Soap and water, and be careful not to get exposed wood too wet. after you clean it use some good polish like Virtuoso. I have restored a lot of old guitars and that is the usual method for getting them to be purty- just don't overdo it! A little patina can be beautiful!

Wood polish wise, I was always taught not to use anything with silicon in it because it would make touch-up or refinishing work hell.

For jazz cords, I'd suggest either one of these E13 tunings:

Bill, the great thing about a triple neck is that you can have your main tuning(s) on one or two necks and have another neck or two open for experimentation. Just keep a good inventory of all string gauges.

For More complex jazz voicings you might want to check out the Leavit tuning. Mike Ihde has some good material on it.

I thought Leavit tuning was a 6 string tuning.

I think Roy Thomson came up with a 8 string Leavitt variation. Mike Ihde might also have some ideas on an 8 string Leavit tuning.- Dave

Okay, I've cleaned it up. BTW, it's birthday is May 6th 1952 and someone with the initials TG put it together. Jody? Do you know who TG is?

I've got the first neck strung up in E7th....

Tadeo Gomez. He did most final inspections and it didnt say Fender till TD said its a Fender. You have a great guitar Bill

Hi Bill,I put this tuning on one of my necks,and I'm finding some real nice chords..I'm workin out Georgia on my Mind with it..So far they are all there.I guess it would be a C9th [kinda-sorta] with dim. on the 4 lowest strings.Starting with the first string.

Interesting: in going back over the forum archive I found a post about a Custom triple 8 selling on ebay for $1,800. The interesting thing (at least for me - I'm sure no one else is interested) is that it was made the day after mine. Of course I had to point this out to my wife to help justify the UPS boxes that keep arriving at our door.

I agree with Howard- Put your favorite tunings on the first two. The third is for new & different tunings.

Now you see why everyone wants a Fender.
