I won the bid on a cool 1949 Harmony with a soapdish pickup. The seller has informed me that the pickup is not working properly. He is trying to fix it. Is it an easy replacement? What could be wrong? If it weren't such a good looking sunburst finish with tortoise shell fret board I would problably let it pass.
Thanks for your advice.

Hey Mike. when a pickup on an old instrument doesnt work it usually means an break in the wire wrapping. an open circuit.
a rewind, if that is the true problem is needed.
I bought a 1940 lap steel from EBAY. it worked, but the output wasnt there.
I contacted Lindy Fralin and they said they could work on it.
after a few weeks the pickup arrived.
what a huge difference.
total cost was 80$.
it was well worth it.

if you want to go this route look for his web site. they want a written note with the pickup. just explain what you think. they will telephone you and explain exactly what they could do.
really nice folks .

The pick up you are referencing is a soap bar pick up. The Harmony pickup is called a soap dish. I think there is a difference. There is a previous thread from back on Feb 6th that talks about this.

I highly recommend Jason Lollar for pickup rewinds. I too got a 49 silvertone with the soapdish pickup. Light as a feather guitar, great tone. Real sleepers as far as tone goes. Classic funky styling, too.
The soapdish pickup needs to have the cover unsoldered if it is worked on. Serious business.

Best of luck, Paul
