I play 6-string C6th tuning lap steel. I've got a rehearsal with a new band coming up and I know they'd like to do a few acoustic numbers. Could I put my tuning on a cheap resonator and 'fake' a dobro? Or will I have to learn all over again with standard Dobro tuning to get it to sound authentic? I think I know the way to 'do it properly' but maybe I could get by? Thanks.

If you are playing blues or bluegrass avoid the 6th note (A). You will be accused of being too Hawaiian.

Hehe, what Gerald said. And if you are playing Hawaiian, avoid the 6th note as well or I will accuse you of being too Waikiki.

Leave the C out or they'll think you're Irish.

Leave the E out or they'll think you're Jewish.

That leaves you with G which is the key and root that most bluegrass is in. You'll be just fine.

Tony...I did the same thing, and it works out great. What I did though was to shift the 6 string C6 tuning down one string, i.e. to an Am7.

Low to high...A C E G A C.

That way youre kind've in the right string gauge zone to actually re-tune to the real
G reso tuning if you want to fool around with it in the future. It also sounds better for blues etc. IMHO.

BTW, I've got a hipshot "trilogy" bridge on order that almost cost as much as my el-cheapo Johnson reso that should really be cool!

I play a bunch of rock/blues on 6 string c6
c e g a c e
but if I wanna play muddy style or with a real tradtional blues band I drop the low c to a and then get major chords in typical 1-4-5 guitar spots
Also When I play freebird in c6 I drop the high c to e for the unision...works amazing
