Hello everyone,

I think that I've read that a Telecaster pickup selector switch would be a good replacement for a broken Stringmaster neck selector switch. Does anyone have experience performing this "surgery"? Is it an exact replacement or am I going to have to do some modification? I've got a two neck Stringmaster with a broken swtich.

Thanks!

Craig

I changed one and the mounting holes line-up. The problem I ran into was it has 6 terminals, 3 on each side. You need to add some jumpers besides attaching the 3 guitar leads. If you are not versed in electronics, you can get the diagram on-line, same wiring as a tele guitar. Hope this helps, Ron

Yup, that's great. Thanks! My biggest concern was whether the switch was going to be a physical match. I can handle the wiring part.

This is an eBay purchase D-8 that I was assured was functioning properly. So far on one neck it turns out that one of pickups doesn't work and the remaining one was spliced directly to the switch bypassing the blender pot. I haven't opened up the other neck yet. Once I get the switch in I'll be able to try out both necks.

If the blender pot is shot, do you have any idea's on where do find a replacement?

If you paid thru paypal, you can put a claim in as it wasn't as advertised. I did this once and got some money back from the seller.

I may be wrong but it should be a basic 250 or 500K pot.

The seller was so nasty that I've disputed the charge. I'd love to force him to take it back. (What he sent is not the same unit as the photo on eBay) By the time I replace the pickups and switch, I'll hardly have a vintage instrument. Certainly not worth what I paid. However, I'm bracing myself for the credit card company telling me I'm stuck with it.

I did leave negative feedback on the seller, but, who knows if that will help the next buyer.

Do you feel like putting up the ebay auction number so the rest of us can avoid him or her?

Hi Craig,

I've bought a couple of "basket-case" Fender and other brand steels on eBay in the last few years with various problems. My guitar tech has been able to restore them to my satisfaction as vintage instruments. He operates out of his own business called "String Theory" in Memphis, TN. His work is inpeckable and if you want his help in fixing up your guitar I would highly recomend him. Let me know if you are interested and I will get him to take a look at your guitar if possible and give you his recomendations on restorations.

Thanks for the info and offer. Here is the auction number 3777104513. Unfortunately, you all saw this one. I didn't find this board (and the associated thread) until after I bought the instrument. I turns out that is a true D-8 (not a chopped T-8 or Q-Cool But, it is a refinish. I knew that and was ok with it. The surgery on the pickups and the broken switch were the surprises.

We'll see how the credit card company and PayPal choose to figure this out. If I'm stuck with it, I'll seek to have the originals rewound and pots and switches replaced. If I can return it, I'd rather do that. I feel cheated and feel I've overpaid. Maybe you guys have a differenct opinion and I'd be happy to listen to cooler heads.
