I just picked up a later model D-8 with the multi-range pickups. The full setting sounds good but the other ones are generally really nasally & muffled - is this how they usually are or should I try replacing the capacitors on the 4-way switches (looks like the original ones are in there)? Thanks! |

The only setting that gives you a full range tone is "Chime"
"Treble" attenuates the bass.
"Normal" sounds like its in a telephone
"Bass" is mostly bass very little treble.
When I got mine, the master tone control was acting like a volume control. That cap was bad.
The others were OK.
Both necks should sound the same. If they don't, you may have an open pickup.
There are three independent pickups in each assembly. |

Unfortunately the labels are worn off this one, but the most forward (away from the player) position must be Chimes? Seems the fullest. I can hear where the Treble & Bass positions seem to highlight either the top or the bottom 4 strings - they must use the two half-pickups. Then the Normal one must be an out-of-phase combination of the Bass & Treble. Interesting idea, I just wish those settings didn't sound so muddy. . .Thanks for the info! |

Hello Paul, if possible, can you send a picture of your Console Grand. Mine is quite old, and I'd like to see what yours looks like, particularly the controls. |

Paul,
That is correct the "Chime" position is furtherest away from the player.
The sequence is: Chime
Treble
Normal
Bass
The pickups are all wired in series. A rather complex switching arrangement shorts out and/or places a capacitor across the various pickups to get the tone variation.
It is an early humbucking pickup.

I just bought it here on the forum - here's a link to the post with a bunch of pictures:

It's not in primo shape but it was a good deal and what I was expecting. I also have an older 8/7 3-leg model, which I have to say I prefer, but I thought I'd give one of the newer ones a try. . . but if someone's interested in it I'll probably move it on soon.
Thanks for the info! |
