Rickenbacher (Rickenbacker?) D8; Aluminum body / Bakelite necks on eBay.
This auction would normally raise caution flags because of the "0" feedback and it referencing another "family" eBay account for feedback. BUT, I have verified the Seller's contacts and cross-referenced the name and address with public records, and verified with the "family" account holder (close relative ... same household) that the auction and "family" account reference are legitimate. I have also made telephone contact with the household. I also made email contact with the Seller who is cordial.
My bid in this auction was below the highest bid so that I could acquire contact data for verification prior to posting the auction alert here on the SGF. I do not intend to continue bidding on this item (can't afford it right now) so anyone interested shouldn't feel reluctant just because my handle is in the bidders list.
I have no association with this auction nor Seller; I'm just posting it here as a potential item of particular interest to SGF Steelers.
Aloha,
DT~

Baz,
If it's not an original case, ...my guess is that it is either a recovered original case or a case custom built for that guitar with framing copied from an original. Those suckers are so darn heavy on the body end that the handle "surely must" be specific to that model guitar; And except for the covering, liner and pickup brace pad in the lid, ...the design of that case is just about identical to those in your pictures. I have a D6 model of that Steel, and my case also looks like the ones in your pics.
The covering and lining on that eBay Steel's case also looks like it's a bit loose; maybe indicative of a recovering or custom origin?
Aloha,
DT~

I have that model, except the tuning gears on mine have chrome plate covers. My case is original and does not have the straps as shown in the pic from Baz. I too think the case on eBay is not original, but it sure looks nice. These are the models which some called "old ugly", but they sure sound good. |

Yea, Keoki, ...the DN6 I have sounds and plays superb too. That hollow body has a distinct hollow resonance expecially when played in a strong speaker field. The bakelite neck and aluminum body has good inter-reactions and gets some of both the Bakelites and the Frypan character ...and sustain from here to the moon. If I wasn't strapped right now I'd sure try to pick that up for the extra strings. I'd be in hog heaven and that Steel would have a warm and happy and deeply appreciative new home!
