On the back of the album,"Admirable Byrd", Chet atkins wrote some beautiful comments about Jerry and his playing. Chet also mentioned that,on all but 3 of the tunes,Jerry used the "old E7th tuning". On Scotty's website it is posted as being :(lo to hi) G# B D E F# G# B E. That is really an E9th. I thought that the "old E7th" was more like: E G# B D E G# B E. Chet wasn't a steel player, so did he make a simple error? Can any of you JERRY BYRD experts clear this up for me???

It was E9th. Here is what Jerry said in an interview about 1973 on this subject.
I did an album called "Admirable Byrd" and I did a lot of pedal sounds in there ... not as good as the pedal guys could do it but is was that sound and it was still different. I wrote a lot of the tunes to show what you could do without pedals in an E9th tuning. One of the songs is I'll Be All Smiles Tonight and I do a lot of bar slant work, you know, and a lot of people still don't believe I did it without a pedal guitar, but I did. |

Thank you, JACK, for sharing a little more info about your exceptionally talented brother. These things may seem like trivia to some but each bit is a gemstone to me.
JERRY might think it is not as good as a pedal-player could have done it, but this pedal-player would have to disagree!
