Here’s a new tune I recorded and mixed over the weekend. It’s the Alvin Kaleolani Isaacs classic ‘Nalani’. You may have first heard this tune recorded ever so romantically by the great Hawaiian crooner Alfred Apaka. His rendition is so soft, gentle and sensitive, almost a lullaby.

My rendition... I tried for the Alfred Apaka look and feel... God knows I tried, but my DNA quickly turned the tune into a Hawaiian vaudeville soft-shoe. What can I say? It’s the way I’m wired.

Nalani

I’m using my Beard/Gold Tone Squareneck tuned CEGACE. The uke is my recent Christmas present a Bushman Jenny (concert size).

Gerald...That was really great..nice flowing sound. Personally, I loved it, but getting back to that "other" thread regarding sticking with the melody...(you know what I mean), NALANI strayed somewhat from the actual melody line almost from the start. But hey, like I said, it was a beautiful job and again, I loved it !!!

Keoki,

I was never one to sit down with a microscope and dissect recordings note for note in order to learn them. I may steal a lick here and there but I quickly get bored and just want to play the tune. Hence, my "own unique style" .

NICE!

The Beard/GT and Bushman "Jenny" both sound [1]very[/i] nice for budget instruments. Of course, it's a good player that can make a budget instrument sound better than it is, too.

I'm the same way about straying from melody. I'll quote some of it, then I get bored, and then I tend to free-form it from that point.

I like the relaxed feel to the tune. Ahhhh...

That's beautiful ... what a treat on such a miserable day.

Gerald,
As Napolian Dynamite would say "sweet"

So what guages do you use for the reso? I'm thinking of getting one of the Beard/GT from our local shop.

Hi Chris (seldomfed, sorry to blow your cover),

I use pretty close to the same gauges that I use on my Bakelite Rick, except I use phosphor bronze strings. I also find that using a Red Rajah or a Black Phoenix bar on a reso cuts down on string noise a great deal, at least for my hands.

.36 .30 .26 .24 .18(p) .16(p)

Or as Napolean Dynomite would say "I use any gauge I damn well please... GOD!"

Does this mean you wont be my rythm man at the conventions anymore, and be the new uke force? That was a great job on Nalani. If the notes or chords were not true as George says, I didn't know the tune anyway!!

Bill, they were TRUE, however the melody line showed imagination which is what makes music so very interesting. Gerald played it beautifully, even though he changed the melody line...which goes back to that "other" thread and the pointless discussion.

Bill,

I will always be your rhythm guitar man at the conventions we attend together and happily do so. And I will continue to twist your arm to get you on stage.

Gerald, great to hear such sweet sounds wafting from the tropical climes of Ann Arbor ;-)

Wonderful little tune and a great sound. And a beautiful job on the ukulele... that was you, right?

Craig.

Yep, me on all instruments.

You can do very cool guitar things on the uke that you can't do on the guitar, like stretch 5 frets comfortably with your pinky.

Don't think of it as a uke, think small guitar.
