Make sure there is a good ground connection from the pickup ( the wire from the center of the pickup that goes to the tone pot )to the ground connection on the volume control. Feel free to add a wire here, they often left this path to be carried by the metal plate. Bad idea. These connections can go high imp. Also check the Hot lead from the pickup to the volume pot. If, after you run this ground wire, and check the Hot pickup wire, the hum goes away when you turn the volume down, but the signal is not right when the volume is full up then you may have a open pickup. My observations-Many or most EH-185 are sunburst-natural maple finish is found on the EH-275 The maple on this one is quite nice-I believe from the look of the cutout and the fact that it has the removable handrest that it did originally have the Charlie Christian pickup(which was horizontally not diagonally mounted and used up to circa 1940)By 1941 the pickup was diagonally mounted-so it is a mystery why the modified diagonal cutout when the Supro pickup is not mounted that way-also unusual is that the supro pickup appears to be a seven string like the Gibson-I have only seen the Supro pickup in 6 and 8 string before that I can recall-Too bad about the pickup change-If it were all original I would love to have this one to match my 1941 natual maple EH-275 which is also a seven stringer |

Jason Lollar might be able to provide a better pickup. [This message was edited by John Billings on 24 November 2006 at 09:52 AM.] |
