After watching, and thoroughly enjoying, Lonnie Bennett at PSGA, playing his 8 string Superslide, I noticed how he used his little finger on the volume knob instead of using a volume foot pedal.
Question: does this technique give any different sound than a volume pedal?
Has this technique been used by many players?
Is it still used?

Yes, the manipulation of the volume knob gives a very different sound than the volume pedal. Using the volume knob creates what is known at the "violin effect". It sounds different because the speed at which the volume can be changed is greater with the volume knob.

Yes, particularly Hawaiian steel guitar players of yesteryear.

Most definitely, particularly with Hawaiian steel guitar playing.

Don

Lots of lap steel players use the tone knob as a wah effect. Playing the volume control is less common. but standard electric guitarists often do it when they try to imitate a steel guitar.

I've seen L.T. Zinn play beautiful Hawaiian steel guitar without a volume pedal, and he didn't touch the volume knob much either. That "swell" effect is not as necessary as many people think it is.

Volume pedals -- pffffft. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know Jerry Byrd used one. And I do respect Jerry Byrd...but not his volume pedal use.

I have an old Fender vol./tone ped. in my set-up,but seldom touch the vol.I do use the tone though.I sometimes like to brighten up the lower notes and soften the higher ones.I'm talking of my Stringmaster.Don't use it with my National 6 stringers at all.PJ

pfft. I use my volume pedal alot.
it could be called an expression pedal the way I have come to use it.
at first I was terribe with it, but in time it became an extention of me and added to my playing ability.
I think this is a 'to each their own' kind of thing.

I don't use volume pedal when I play my Laps. I like th think it imoproves my touch and my right hand technique. However, I do use a volume pedal when I play my PSGs.

Randy -- it is truly a "to each their own" kinda thing. There are no rules. Whatever floats your boat.

I only use mine for swell effects, not to extend sustain; I never hold a note that long anyway.

Bill, you genius.

I have been wondering for many years what is the best use of the foot volume control pedal, and alas, we have found it.

Thanks for this great contribution.

Aloha,
Don

I still use it around home for making longer sustain, but it's one less item to haul around, away from home.
