Or: "My cheap reso is buzzing"

my new Johnson reso guitar has developed a buzz. Open 3rd and 4th strings set the mini screen (cone?) on the treble side buzzing. Goes away if I place my finger on it (even gently), but that doesn't do me much good while playing.

Other than the obvious (spend more and get a decent instrument ), does anyone have any ideas of how to remedy this? No screws to tighten on this part.

Thanks,

Dan

You could ask the players at Reso-Nation.

Does the screen come out very easily? If so, put a piece of electrical tape around the edge, and put it back in place. Should stop the rattle.

I'd pull the screen unit out and put a little silicone on it and pot it back in.

I think that the screens are typically glued in place on the less expensive instruments, so be careful trying to remove the screens...

I'm pretty sure that it is glued down. How are they attached on better instruments?

On my Guernsey, they're just pressed in. Jerry Douglas took the screens out of one of his guitars (can't remember which) to install a pickup.

Won't hurt anything but the looks to leave the screens out.

If the screen was glued it wouldn't rattle. Pry it out gently with a putty knife or similar thin blade and put some tape or silicon around the hole to take up the slack. Don't condem your instrument for such a small flaw. Billy

Thanks for all the tips folks.

No condemnation from me: just recognizing that a cheaper instrument is more likely to have these sorts of issues than a high-priced one. I'm perfectly happy with this instrument for now, while I am learning.

The screen might still rattle if it came loose from the trim ring.

You might try working dental floss under the ring to see if it can be coaxed loose. That way there is less chance of damaging the top than if you used a putty knife.
