How do you capture the screen to an image file on a Mac (OS X 1.3)?

Thanks! That creates a PDF on the desktop that can easy be converted to a JPG.

...and if you want to just copy a selected area, use Apple-Shift-4

I now use a Widget called iPhotoMini. Works great. Makes JPGs.

Alternately, you can make PDF screen shots by:

Command (Apple) + Shift + 3
Captures entire screen

Command (Apple) + Shift + 4
Gives you Crosshairs, then you click and drag and let go, enabling you to customize your crop

Command (Apple) + Shift + 4, them Spacebar
You first get a camera icon; after pressing the space bar you can take a picture of any open window.

If you have Tiger, a cool Dashboard widget for this was just released:

Bob, I rely exclusively on Snapz Pro X from Ambrosia software. Been a great screen capture app for Macs for many years, now does QT live action capture, and with sound. But mainly you can save AND name a screen shot as JPG, PNG, PDF, in Mac color space, Windows color space, save it to a location of your choice, etc. Very cheap, very robust, and the company is groovy.
