I have used it and the sound is great quality. Four or five people can talk at the same time. My cousin and a friend use it to play computer golf over the MSN Gaming Zone. We talk and play golf just like we were golfing together.

I also us Skype daily and for those in North America that are not aware of this, you can call any phone number in the US or Canada for free with Skype until the end of 2006. I have been calling friends anytime in Canada for as long as I wish and the quality is like the regular phone. If any steelers want to talk to me, search for pedalsteeler, right click to put me into your contacts. If you have a webcam then we can talk and see each other. Great way to jam. Thanks. 250-847-9694 try it.

Jim,
Check this out: http://www.fcc.gov/voip/

I haven't used Skype, but I've had a paid VOIP service (Lingo) for about 6 months, instead of the $60-$70 bucks a month I was paying SBC, I pay 20.00 which includes 'free' long distance anywhere in the US, and to many European countries.

I was concerned about dropouts, quality, etc, but it works great..

I also use Lingo, and have been on it since Feb. 2005. As Bill said it works great and my total bill is $22.09 per month for local and unlimited long distance including all extra services.

Go to www.lingo.com for info. If you sign up, use my or Bill's name and you get $25 and 1 month service free.

Bob

The word, at least here in Florida, is that they are going to start adding on all the taxes that regular telephone services have to charge. If that's the case, from many people, it doesn't make the VOIP telephone services a bargain.

e.g. Brighthouse (my roadrunner cable provider) charges $35.95 for local and long distance VOIP but taxes will add a big chunk to that price and not make it as attractive as it is now. I'm currently paying $31.45 (includes all taxes) to Embarq (formerly Sprint) for local plus 60 minutes of long distance (and I've never went over the 60 minutes).

Ebay has purchased Skype recently and is planning on offering another service that will allow a bidder to 'skype' the seller (if the seller has a skype account.

I personally have used skype while helping my father (in Pa.) work out problems with his computer via XP's remote assistance facility. That was pretty cool to be talking to my dad over the internet while working on his computer over the internet as well. The performance was unaffected.

This is really neat! I just had a nice conversation with Ben through SKYPE - he even has a webcam, so I was able to see him, unfortunately he couldn't see me, so a webcam is the next thing I have to get!

Kind Regards, Walter

I've used Vonage for almost a year now and it works great. 14.95 a month for 500 minutes or 24.95 for unlimited. Incoming calls do not go against your minutes.
