I've made many PP payments but I've never received any. I've got a basic personal account. Without doing anything to my account, am I set up to receive funds (within the personal account $$ limit)? Is it as simple as that or do I need to register or enable anything? Anybody know?

The basic account will not let you accept payments funded thru credit cards. If you upgrade, you get 4% deducted as a fee for the priviledge of accepting plastic!!!! My PP is funded thru my checking account, so payments take 5 days to clear. I think that answers it unless someone can add something.

Ron, is that only when the payment is made through a crdeit card, or is that deduction on all payments? I have the premier account, but I don't really know exactly how it works.

Fees for receiving payments from buyers in the United States.

Fees per transaction (USD) 2.9% + $0.30 USD 2.5% + $0.30 USD 2.2% + $0.30 USD 1.9% + $0.30 USD

Seems to me, the way I read it, for the basic package (like mine) there is no fee. But I am limited to receiving $500/mo. with no CC transactions. Not being a dealer, this works for me.

Could be wrong, I think I just have the basic plan taking it in and out of my bank account, and every time I sell something they keep about 3 1/2% - If it is a very big item I ususally insist on a money order unless the buyer wants to add the difference

I just did some more searching and I confirm----there is no fee to send or receive funds with a personal account. However you cannot receive credit card or debit card payments. And there is a $$ limit. I presume that this leaves only direct bank account transfers? I have no sense about just how limiting this is, having, as of yet, no experience selling via PP. The way I see it (and as per a FAQ on the PP site), if someone were to try to make a CC payment, PP would hold it while I exercised my option to upgrade to a commercial account.
I'll wait and see.

Jon, Paypal will not automatically deposit the payment in your bank account. The payment is saved in your Paypal account.
Go to your Paypal account and look at your paypal balance. You can leave it in your Paypal account to be used for payments, or you can elect to have it transferred to your bank account.

Jon - I just got through with a sale through bank transaction with Pay Pal - and they do deduct from the sale as I stated - always have.

You are exactly correct. That just happened to me.
They'll let you know it's there and you can either accept or reject it. If you reject it the sender gets his money back.

If you accept it, you also have to agree to the upgrade.

I decided to upgrade. Now I get charged 2.5%, but there are some additional features I like that make it worth it to me.

My favorite is the "Buy It Now" button that you can embed on your web site. I just put one on my "Mooney Style DVD" page.

This can get your eBay listing cancelled, if you state this in your listing. EBay calls this circumvention of fees, and it is not allowed. I tried it once and they cancelled my listing. I had to relist without the phrase " If you use PayPal add 3%"

Ebay fees are a rip.

Correctamundo, compadre.

Precisely the reason I closed my Ebay account (with great difficulty-easy to sign up, big-time hard to get out of their grasp).

And, since Ebay owns PayPal, I don't buy my strings here on the forum. It's a little crazy, the way our steel guitar community is so far behind the times, technology-wise.

The major online resellers (Carter, Musician's Friend, Elderly, yada, yada) are set up to accept all major credit cards. They know that's how to get business. But, in our little steel guitar world, still stuck in its 19th century mindset, many of the vendors don't to see the potential of giving buyers payment options. It's an aggravation.

I want to buy my steel guitar supplies online, and I'd do it here on the forum, but with no other options besides PayPal (Ebay), I have to go elsewhere.

I am looking for a certain volume pedal. There are a couple listed on e bay, used and low priced. I refuse to use paypal, so I'm getting one at a local music store. More money, but new and no hasssle with the price bid auction.

Plus, I'll have it in my hands tommorrow with no waiting for shipping and easy return if it has any problems.

I buy strings here on the forum because I can use Paypal. I also buy my fiddle stuff from Johnson String because they accept Paypal. I'm an ebayer, both buying and selling and have no problem with their fees. They're providing a service and should be compensated for it. As with everything else if you don't like the price you don't have to buy. I just wish Bobby Lee sold banjo strings.

I've got no problems if people need to vent about Paypal on this thread. I've got no stake in it. But for the record, I like sliced bread a lot and I think Paypal is the best thing since.

Ebay/Paypal would be **wonderful**, if using them was as easy as their promo stuff claims. Unfortunately, they both are so bound up with rules upon rules that they're more bother than they're worth to me.

They want to be "universal", collecting transaction fees, in the process. Major credit cards *ARE* universal, except for those few internet sellers who refuse to join the rest of the world in terms of already-accepted methods of payment for internet commerce.

To a buyer with a major credit card in hand, there's not any incentive to switch that I can see. Quite obviously, there are others who do see an incentive, and willingly use the PayPal/Ebay alternative. Different strokes.
