My 24 bit Soundblaster Audigy has crashed my mainframe a couple of times. I had a real nighmare the other day with it.

I get the bluescreen of death and an "Exception" in a vxd ahxxxxx yada yada.

It happens a lot.

First of all typing the exact vxd and googling it will ususally yield a fix from another puter.

From a safe mode you remove the soundcard, and then reinstall the software from the CD and it fixes the problem.

It can be a real pain.

Get the latest drivers from Creative. They are free and they fix the problem. The problem is fairly common with the original Creative CD. Better yet, trash your Audigy 2 and get an Audigy 4. I had no end of problems with an Audigy 2 ZX Pro Platinum and WinXP Pro. The Audigy 4 installed perfectly without a hitch and sound with some different sound fonts is outstanding.

Well, based on this, I probably will pass on upgrading my Audigy II to the IV. I try to keep my drivers updated, BTW, and I do find the current ones pretty stable. BSOD issues are definitely most often hardware related, in my experience over the years.

But, since this review is dated Nov 2004, I'm reminded that it might be time to upgrade to something else.

What I'd really like is to find a wireless 7.1 speaker system, so I don't have all the speaker wires running everywhere.

I have the original Audigy card and am quite happy with it. I don't think I've ever updated the drivers. It really pays to have a registry/file repair utility on your computer it will tell you exactly what files are damaged or causing issues and then repair them. The only time I get errors/BSOD is when my computer overheats.

Thanks to all.

I've got a nice homemade Asus533 P4 puter I built a long time ago and actually with Win98SE I've used the same HDD for the last two computers, transferring it to a new HDD complete. 98SE is the most crash resistant OS on the planet IMHO.

It had happened before, but I spaced it out, and mistakenly entered a 4 year old registry copy I'd made from the "safe Mode'. BOY was that a mistake! Luckily I was able to pull my wits back and go to COmmand prompt and enter regedit.exe/restore or whatever it was. I was able to chose one of 4 recent boots.

I went to Google on my wife's puter, and typed in the exact vxd on the bluescreen, and found the Audigy problem. Removed the sound card from the profile, reinstalled the software and boom. The CD proggy had a choice to "reinstall to repair damaged files". so it was not an unexpected problem.

Wow. I get spoiled and forget some of the things that can go wrong.

I think what happened is when the machine froze on a problem java app on one of my mail filter pages ( both NS7 and IE) I was also running a sound app, and it wrenched the vxd or something like that.

I like the AudII and I got it to run 24bit apps and my Podxt.

I'll look into an upgrade for sure, download the latest drivers, and see what happens.

Thanks.

EJL

With Win98 or 98SE anything is possible. I'm glad you like it as most others do not. The Audigy 2 (entire Audigy line) is really made for Windows XP, with special hardware and software requirements (different from the older Win9x/ME).

The Audigy line causing a blue screen in Windows XP is almost unheard of - but then most Blue Screens (all if it's working correctly) are a thing of the past with Windows XP.

I have an Audigy 2 Platinum EX (external I/O box) on my P4 Win XP system and it has NEVER blue screened or caused a problem.

I didn't know there was an Audigy for mainframes! That's way out of my league, Eric. How did you end up with a mainframe, anyway? And one that runs Windows??
