I can go along merrily along playing, recording and rendering. But then for some reason, when I go to play, BIAB says that the VSC driver is being used by another program. I guess it's the VSC rendering software. From that point onward, the rendering SW can't open the driver either. I can play if I select the Windows driver, but still can't render. My question is, how do I free up the driver short of the painful step of restarting the computer?

I get that too and asked George Wixon about it. It's a fluke and a reboot seems to be the only cure. It's a pain sometimes. I have BIAB 2005.

This is from the PGmusic FAQ section and I also found this to create problems with the VSC being in use. I would suggest that you do not make the VSC your default midi driver.
Select something other than the VSC as your default MIDI driver in Windows
On Windows XP, go to Start | Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices | Audio tab. On Windows 2000, go to Start | Settings | Control Panel | Sounds and Multimedia | Audio.
Select something other than the Roland VSC for default audio and MIDI playback.
Restart your computer

You took the bait!!!! I knew if I vaguely quoted you, I could draw you out in the open. Was I at least in the ballpark? I'm still punchy from shoveling 20 inches of snow. I did check as you outlined and my VSC isn't default. So I guess it's rebooting for me.

Your funny Ha ha.
That's why I live in an apartment complex. Let someone else do the snow work.
I quit using the VSC and went to the DXI Forte instead. Haven't had any problems since and the sound is better.

Do I do what you said 3 threads ago and simply add the DXI Forte ?
Next question where do I find the DXI Forte ?

Choosing something other than the VSC as your default for playing a midi file was only if you are using the VSC with BIAB.
The Forte DXI is a totally different software program and has nothing to do with the VSC. The Forte DXI can be purchased through the PGMusic site. I would suggest that you download the trial version which is free for a period of 30 days and then if you like it, you can purchase it. PG Music has sample files on there site that you can listen to as comparison between the VSC and the DXI. One nice thing I like about using the Forte is that the 430 ms latency can be cut down.
