In my back-up to cd post I mentioned my computer starts up with the blue screen scan disk because of shutdown error, etc. issue. Well, I finally allowed it to proceed. After 3 hrs I have ZERO errors on my hard disk. So, how do you shut that feature off in case it happens again? It wastes a lot of time especially when an error does not exist. TIA

It's been a while since I worked on a Win98 machine, but you should have an option to cancel the scan.

Murphy's law also comes into play. Usually it won't find any errors, but there can be.

3 hours is not right for scan disk. What options do you have set, the full surface scan? (normally you don't need that).

Eric;
You will find a complete answer to your questions about Scandisk on my website, on the FAQs page, under the topic "How do I stop Scandisk from running automatically upon rebooting under Windows 9x?," and also see "What standard & advanced settings do you use on Scandisk (Win 9x, M.E.)?" and "When I try to run Defrag and Scandisk they just keep restarting (Win 9x). What can I do to get them to complete their tasks?" There are other typical questions and answers there that you will find useful.

My FAQs page is located here.

Thanks Jack and Wiz. I will check out the FAQs on your page. I can tell you that I ran the scan and defrag from safe mode, something else I learned here.

It still sounds like you did a full surface scan - which you normally do not have to do.

Eric, I can't address what may be causing your scan-disk at startup, but I don't think you need to let it run it's course. We get the blue scan-disk a lot because of power interruptions, etc. Just hit the space-bar and it should bypass scan-disk and continue a normal boot-up.

Tommy, I got tired of hitting enter 4 times to start windows, that's why I let it scan through.
