My wife is having a problem with Outlook on her work computer. When she opens a new e-mail, reads it, and then just closes it, it disappears completely. Not in any folder or the delete file - it's just gone.

Does anybody have any ideas? Is there some setting that she may have messed up. Any advise would be great. Thanks guys!

Bob

Hey, this same thing has been happening to me all day long! I'm missing lots of emails that were sent today. The only way I can view them is to log on to my email remotely via internet instead of via outlook. Then, they're all there. You might suggest that to your wife, if it applies to her system as well.
Good luck and I'll watch this thread for a solution, I hope!

See if this Microsoft Tech article applies to the problem.

I've seen other posts on this and I remember something about an option to only show "new" messages (ones that have not been displayed (read)) but I can't find the option in Outlook or Outlook Express.

The problem I have had intermittenly is that after sending an e-mail there is no file copy or record anywhere that it was sent. It's resulted in having to send another e-mail to ensure that one was sent, and then the recipient receives two!

I think Jack hit the nail on the head. If I remember right, F5 is a toggle for some of the view settings, easy to bump and mess things up. But if read messages disappear, it's most likely a view option set wrong.

Both Outlook and Outlook Express

Another very easy trap to fall into that might cause messages "disappear" is to simply have an improper view applied. Both Outlook and Outlook Express have the ability to show only messages matching certain criteria. For example "show only unread messages" is a common setting - once you read the message, it "disappears". Applying a different view that doesn't restrict which messages are shown causes the message to reappear. Check the View menu in either application (and the Arrange By sub menu if present) to see what your current settings are. If they're restrictive, it's possible your mail is still there, just not in view.
---------------

After sending a message, it goes into sent items. Select the sent box folder. Check under view / current view make sure it's set to show all messages. If it still doesn't work, check under advanced view for something set wrong, like "show until x days", etc.

Excerpt from http://xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1955034,00.html#1

* Click the View menu.
* Select Current View.
* You can select one of three Views.

Show All Messages
Shows all of the messages in your email folders. The default setting is Show All Messages.

Hide Read Messages
Shows you unread messages only.

Hide Read or Ignored Messages
Hides messages that you have read or that you have applied the Ignore Conversation command to.

You can also define new views or customize existing views by using the Customize Current View and Define View menus which let you apply further conditions to your views. These conditions are:

* Where the From line contains people
* Where the Subject line contains specific words
* Where the message is marked as priority
* Where the message is from the specified account
* Where the message was sent more than x days ago
* Where the number of lines in the message is more than x lines
* Where the message has an attachment
* Where the message has been read
* Where the message body has been downloaded
* Where the message is flagged
* Where the message is watched or ignored
* Where the message is secure
* For all messages

You must unselect For all messages to select one or more of the other view conditions.

Outlook Express 4

* Click the View menu.
* Select Current View.
* You can select one of two Views.

All Messages
Shows all of the messages in your email folders. The default setting is Show All Messages.

Unread Messages
Shows you unread messages only.

Thank you for all the excellent information. With this help, my wife Lynn was able to correct the problem she was having (an issue with a filter setting). She asked me to thank you all for your help. A big thanks from me too!
