OK- I give up. Been trying to figure this out for a while now can't get to the bottom of it.
Here is an example---
Doug Beaumier has some beautiful pictures of his Stringmaster in another thread.I have downloaded them into a file but can't open them with any photo program I have (Photoshop, Dell Pic Studio and a few others)
One of his pics opens as a bitmap,the rest look to be JPEG but won't open.

When you are viewing an image right click on it and select Save As. A Save dialog will open with the filename filled in. If it ends with .jpg, that is it's proper extension. You can also right click on the photo and choose Properties. The Properties will usually identify the file type.
JPG is the most common format for displaying photos on websites. Bitmaps and TIFFs are huge files and rarely used on the web. The other common web image formats are PNG and GIF. Gifs only display 256 colors and are no good for photography purposes. PNGs support millions of colors at a filesize similar to a .jpg, and were developed to be an alternative to JPG files, as a web display format.
If you are still having a problem with these pictures post a link to them here and I'll go look at them and tell you what extensions they have and which programs open them by default.

When I try to open any pic I get an error message "unknown or invalid JPEG marker encountered"
The "properties" all look like I should be able to open them (.jpg)
I don't have problems with other .jpg images in the same folder.
I used the right click "Save picture As" method of downloading

If I'm not mistaken I think I've had this problem before with downloaded pics.I just figured it was some kind of copyright protection so gave up and deleted the pic.
Could there be some WinXp preference or control set or not set that disallows opening downloaded pics?I've sniffed around a bit with this in mind but can't seem to find anything. |

The top image saved (right click, "save image as", and opened for me fine with Netscape and Photoshop. I didn't try the rest, but I doubt there's any kind of protection going on.
I think the problem is in your computer, especially if it's not a new problem. First thing I'd try is deleting the file type association for this image type. My PC shows three, JPE, JPEG, and JPG. After you delete those, double-click on any jpeg image file and tell Windows what app to open it with. |

I right clicked the first pic and saved directly to My Pictures, and it opened fine.

I just downloaded all of the photos of that StringMaster and they all opened fine in CoffeeCup Quick Viewer, which is my chosen default program to open (not edit) JPGs.
I believe it may be in your best interest to reinstall your graphics programs and make sure that you have upgraded Windows against image rendering vulnerabilities. Patches were released for at least three major image vulnerabilities this calendar year.

Thanks --I'm pretty sure my photo viewing and editing programs are OK I use them all the time.I have .jpg pics downloaded from eMail attachments in the same folder and they open fine with all my photo programs.
Seems to be only pics from websites that get fouled up in the download process.
