The warnings have been out before, but I just received a very professional looking message from e-bay, reminding me to pay an outstanding bill or my account will be terminated. It asks me to print the attached bill (which my antivirus program had already removed). Problem is that I never had any business going with e-bay in my life (yeah, there's still a few left like me on this planet ), never bought or sold anything.

The message looks really authentic, it uses the e-bay logo and a footer with all information, like contact e-mail address etc.

And the worst: It warns you to give out any personal details like account and credit card information as e-bay would never ask for that through e-mail.

So as a reminder: Be careful with all messages from e-bay or other similar sources!

Kind Regards, Walter

Just a clarification, Walter, if it's a "spoof" email, it's not from Ebay.

They sure do look official, but it's some scammer in Nigeria or Sri Lanka or Terre Haute, and no fault of Ebay's.

These days we have to be careful every step of the way. I get similar "notices" every day from official looking bank websites as well, where I'ver never had accounts. I suppose if they blanket everybody on the net they catch a few unaware...

Be careful, and slow on the "Enter" key...

Just check the headers. I received one a few years back looked like CITI Bank. Accept I have no account. Clicked headers and the reply was to some individual at att.net.

I received what looked like a legit question from an eBay customer.
It appeared just like all others where the person used the "ask the seller a question" option.
It was loaded with adware etc.which got through becauseI approved the file opening.
I'm still gunning down stuff from it weeks later.
What a mess!Watch Out!

Sorry, Mark, bad wording! I know that it is not coming from e-bay, instead it is using the e-bay appearance.

I have already forwarded the message to the local e-bay address they provide for those spoof messages.

Kind Regards, Walter

I grew up in the area/time when no one locked their house doors. Sadly, we even have to keep our internet doors locked these days. Sometimes progress ain't all it's cracked up to be!

Another scam is to pay with a bogus cashiers check. Heard about this on the Clark Howard show tonite.

Gentlemen;
Please forward ebay scams to spoof@ebay.com and PayPal scams to spoof@paypal.com. This is in addition to reporting them to your SpamCop accounts, if you are members.

Thank you
Wiz
