HSGA member Kay Das from Singapore has just sent us a tune he plays in a big band setting. According to Kay, he recorded this number with his Charvel/Jackson steel converted to a dobro using a D major tuning.

Very nice tone to his steel. Listening to "I UNDERSTAND" and realizing he is using a very simple D (8 string) tuning makes me wonder what all the fuss is about regarding "what tuning should I use ?" He plays it beautifully and manages to get all the right chords into this lovely ballad.

The site says it's a 6-string tuning.

I am assuming a six string. The email Kay sent me before I converted the tune and posted it did not indicate 6 or 8 strings. He also did not elaborate on how he converted a Charvel-Jackson to a Dobro.

Does Charvel-Jackson make steel guitars? I doubt it. It's probably a solid body guitar with raised nut.

I listened to "I understand". He does it well and sounds nice.. Sounds like he is using two notes most of the time in thirds. We had to do it like that in the late 30's, with a 6 string....Brings back some memories, that's for sure. ....al

Is that a pre or post-war Charvel/Jackson?

It sounds really good (as does Kay!).
