well, it turns out that the pickups in my newly-aquired steel need rewinding. it's a 1952-ish fender D8 with the trapazoid pickups. a friend of mine had his done by jason lollar, and was quite happy. my repair guy gets a dealer price from lindy fralin, and it's a better price that lollar.
any thoughts? thanks, john |

I agree that Lindy does fine work.I have had Lindy work on my pickups and his work and price is fair. But having
had pickups done by Jason has no equal. He does the job better than original.

Jody has stated exactly what I have heard from many players.
Jason's main expertise started with steel guitar pickups. He knows that trap pickup like nobody else on the planet. He also knows the magnets, and you should have him recharge those AlNiCo endbells when you have the bobbin rewound.
That said, Fralin's strat pickups are reported to be the best on the planet.
Hope this helps.

Jason Lollar's "Pole Piece-less Bobbin" ...
This isn't a re-wind ... it's a completely new unit ...

I had an old epiphone lap steel from 1939. had Lindy fralin rebuild it and now this lap steel roars. it is full of tone and character.
gefore sending the pup off for repair the output was extremely low and there was no character.
the turn around time was excellent. and the communication was perfect.
I would highly recommend Fralin. |

thanks for your replies, everybody. here's a related question: it seems like these pickups need rewinding more than other pickups. i've heard a lot of stories about early "trapazoid" pickups being rewound, compared to later stringmaster pickups and early telecaster pickups. was this a design flaw, or just coincidence?

The design was/is ingenious.
The degradation of the bobbin material is simply a function of age ...
It's a very delicate bobbin ...

I've had (6)-Trapezoids rewound by Jason within the past year with great uniformity. I have (2) great sounding Fender T–8 Customs thanks to Jason Lollar's expertise! click here and click here to see what I have.

john-
i've seen those pictures, and those are some mighty fine looking guitars. i especially like the "silver-gray" one. that's a great color.
it was also interesting to see that the output on your pickups is 11k ohms. mine are 450 and 680!
thanks for the info.
