I'm trying to find a backup program that will, ideally, backup a system drive (including open system files) and create an image file on a network hard drive.

Any experiences or recommendations? All help is appreciated. Thanks.

Lou

If you use Symantec's Ghost to Ghost a drive (as in make an exact drive image to another drive)for WinXP or Win2000 try not to have 2 drives on the IDE bus that both have bootable partitions. Once you Ghost or image the drive, do not try to restart the PC with both the master and the image drives connected. Disconnect the image drive before restarting the machine. If you wanna test the image drive, set it's jumpers to master if necessary, then start it on the IDE bus by itself.

Win2K does flaky things when the Ghosted drive remains connected and you try to restart the machine. Both drives will get screwed up.

Acronis True Image 8 is the best. It operates right from windows and will even backup a RAID system.

I'll second the vote for Acronis True Image 8. I've been using it successfully for a while now.

Since it runs under Windows, one can make an image of a drive, even the one where the OS is, and do it in the background, while doing other things with the computer.

A lot of the competition force you to reboot and run in a proprietary DOS-like mode, and you can't use the system for anything else while the backup is taking place.
