Thanks to everyone who responded to my first post about a carter starter for sale. I received offers for trades, advice, all kinds of good info from folks here.
My progress report.....I decided to keep the Carter and take off the pedals and knee levers....Ernie Pollack's idea. Started with just 8 strings on it, then put on the other 2. After 3 weeks of playing and jamming with our band on it, every so often folks are saying "Hey--that sounded pretty dang country to me!" Doubled up scales in 6ths and 3rds kinda confused me, I could only get part of them. Then I got DeWitt Scotts Mel Bay book last week....oh my! I have months of work ahead of me, but I just love the instrument and c6 tuning....
Anyone have advice on a good book for 8-10 string non pedal? I want to get Cindy Cashdollar's DVD set, but I find the value better on books -- more lessons for less money.
Thanks again all

I think you are on the right track with Scotty's book. There is a lot of information in there if you take the time and not hurry through. I went through it with an eight string and learned several short-cuts using the high G string instead of going above the (E string) 12th fret.
If you want to really get serious get Jerry Byrds handbook (also from Scotty) I have yet to get it but I have seen it. A lifetime of information in that one.
By the way Cindy's video is also very good if you work on each section until you are good at it. Most people just learn the songs and not the theory. I am just starting volume two after several months. Each time I watch it I learn something new.
Remember two steps forward and one step back is still progress... zen guitar.

Hey Dan, how about selling me all the "pedal steel" parts from the Carter Starter?

Probably won't help much...I can't remove the changer. Contacting you off-list.
