Thanks to Gene Jones and a son at Microsoft I am getting started on digitizing my cassette and lp collection. Gene incidentally has a very interesting and enjoyable web page, check it out http://www.genejones.com
If I can find it locally I will buy Microsoft's Plus! Digital Media Edition today, I could download it but I prefer hard copy. The program records analog into digital in either MP3 or Microsoft's WMA files. WMA are slightly smaller. I have been here 77 years but am awfully young in media knowledge. Hi Al, I prefer the mp3, but basically just listen for yourself.
Record one of each of the same song, and listen to the change.
Both change the sound a bit.
There are also different settings for quality available,
Larger files sound better.
192k sample rate is better sounding than 75kz,
but also slower to down load on the net.
If you want to burn cd's for the car, there and many newer Cd players that will play mp3 cd's, and you could put the full carrer or Ray Price on one cd
Yep, musically it is a brave new world.

Al,
Check out the following two products. The first is the iMic. http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic/
It is an inexpensive interface from your tape or record player into your computer. It comes with software to clean up hiss and record pop.
The other is Audacity, it is free. It is a very simple and feature laden program. Thats 35 bucks for the two and you will have all you will need for some time to come. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/about.php
I would stay away from WMA files. |

Jon the iMic is a nice little box.
I have never been happy with the last generation of audiocard built in my Mac,
so I think I will get one of those myself for the OS X outputing stuff. On OS 9 I can go out my protools links, |

Personally, I would stay away from WMA. Its the least popular of the more popular formats right now. I've never used the windows recorder with the plus digital media add on, but if its like any other built-in windows app it probably barely works if it all. I would use that or any other software and save them as .wav files. THen use something like Apple's iTunes to convert them to a 192k mp3 or like a 160k AAC. AAC which is a .m4a file is apple's format which I think is a little better sounding than mp3. It doesnt have that washy high end sound that mp3 can have.

Al,
If you are going to make 1 disk per album/tape, then why not stay with WAV files. There is no loss, and even though they are quite large, you can still get up to 20 songs per CD. And there is a lot of free software out there that you can get that will record in this format. (Some of it is already on your computer).
If not, the go with MP3, because most of the new CD players, (even the ones in your car), can play the MP3 format.
