Windows XP home. Somewhere along the way My sounds changed while changing screens. As in clicking on the computers thread-no problem. When clicking the back button I get the ding wav. I've deleted all the aol crap that got on here and deleted any other ding.wav file I found in the search function. This thing sounds like a raindrop and is loud and gets to me no end. I want it gone, yet having deleted all wave files I can find, it's still here.
Arrrgggh. What am I missing?
By the way b0b. I did what you said about fonts and everything is OK. Didn't know about that function let alone how I accidently changed it. Thanks.[This message was edited by Ken Lang on 18 October 2004 at 07:16 PM.] |

Go to "Control Panel" - "Sounds and Audio Devices" - "Sounds" - choose "No Sounds", click "apply". That should do the trick...

Thanks for the reply. Your suggestion will work I'm sure. I don't mind some of the other sounds.
At this point I'm on a vendetta to get that dam ding off my computer. It's no longer a curiosity, it's an obsession.
And I might learn something in the process. |

You can set the sound for each action on your computer. Deleting sound files is the wrong way to go. Just set the sound for whatever command offends you to "None". |

b0b. I can understand what you are saying; problem is I don't know what the command is.
Here's what happens. If I'm reading a post and click back to the thread, there is no sound. If I then click back to the main screen I get the ding. Also when clicking on favorites for instance, when the screen from that site comes on, I get maybe 4 dings followed by a 5th some 3 sec later.
If something doesn't come to mind from you, and that's ok, I'll go into sounds and turn them off one by one till I find the dirty rat that's driving me crazy.
Thanks. Ken |

Maybe it's your pop-up blocker making that noise. |

Yes, Jim is right. The way you describe sometimes having several 'plings' on one side indicates that it's your pop-up blocker.
I suppose you have XP service pack 2 installed, right? You'll need to go where it says 'Tools' (right between 'Favorites' and 'Help'), find 'pop-up blocker', open 'pop-up blocker settings', and you'll see where it says "Play a sound when a pop-up is blocked". Uncheck that box, and it should be fine.

Here's the deal so far. I went to sounds and put in none as the default.
I use google as a search bar and pop up blocker. It has a count tab to announce how many popups have been blocked. The drop sound does not match the count. The drop sound is far more prevelant. To be sure, I went into the google options and turned off the (sound when making a block.)
The drop sound is still there.
My eyes turn into narrow slits. My fingers curl in, forming claws swiping at the keyboard. My head pulls into my body till I have no neck and my upper lip curls showing soon to be fangs. Halloween is coming early for me.
Woe is me. I will never look at a raindrop hitting a puddle in the same way again. |

As long as you use Internet Explorer as your browser, and have WinXP SP2 installed, the XP pop-up blopcker will work in the background unless you have turned it off (which is not a good idea).
Doesn't matter what you do to your Google opp-up blocker,- The XP's blocker can/will still be running in the background!
Have you tried doing as I said, in the explorer window? Up to the left there's a list of menus, go to 'Tools' and proceed from there........

Steinar. Turns out I did not have the service pack 2. I downloaded it and it is now installed.
I went to the tools menu and turned off the pop up sound. To no avail. I even rebooted. To no avail. It's still there as loud as ever.
Speaking of loud, might there be a way to turn only that sound down? I could live with it softer. When listening to a song on the Forum or the internet I turn my speakers up and when that ding comes it almost knocks me off my chair.
Thanks. Ken |

Hmmmmm......... I have to admit that at this point I'm lost, I have no idea what it can be if it's not a pop-up blocker causing this.
I hope you get it sorted out one way or the other Ken, stuff like this can really drive you mad.
Do you have any other firewall than XPs installed?

Ken,
I know exactly what this is. It is a "click" rather than a "ding" right? They happen rather quickly in a row right? If this is what I think it is, you need to install the "fix" from the Windows Update. I believe that the patch is also included in Service Pack 2. In Internet Explorer go to the TOOLS menu and scroll down to "WINDOWS UPATE". That will take you to the site. Download and install all the available updates. This should stop that clicking noise. We ran into this bug at work a couple of months ago. Drove us crazy until Microsoft released the fix for it.
Cheers!

Mark. It is a ding, not a click. The wav file ding sounds like a raindrop. (bwoop)
I have updated everything from windows. I have turned off all pop up blocker sounds from windows, google and everything I can think of. I have turned off all pop up blocking as well as McAffee virus checker. I have scoured all wav files to be sure drop.wav does not exist on my computer.
Still, when I click on the Forum and click enter here-(bwoop). I can then click on a thread and go deeper if something is available...no sounds then. But when I hit the back button and get to the thread page-(bwoop)
I can go to MSN-no sound-go deeper in a link and maybe a sound. Hit return...ah, it's crazy.....
So-suggestions folks-if anyone is left watching. Dump Netscape--dump IE or maybe both. Im ready. |

Well, as a troubleshooting test you could always download the free Opera browser and see if that helps. You can always go back to IE later. The English version is here: http://www.opera.com/download/index.dml?step=3&opsys=Windows&lng=en-GB&platform =Windows&local=y
(I have never used the Opera browser myself, so this is not a recommendation, just a suggestion..)
Steinar
PS - perhaps switching to Opera will give you a nice soprano voice instead of that 'ding'....

I just went into netscape 7.2 I've had it on here for awhile, but all the BS they give you about tagging in your bookmarks never works, so I've hesitated in switching over. I'll have to redo them now. OK, fair trade for-
GUESS WHAT. No more ding.wav. No more (BWOOPS)
Just silence, no matter where I surf.
It is so quiet, so peacefull. No more hassle. No more noise. No more tearing out what's left of my hair. I could almost fall asleep....
