I just bought a new computer with XP Home Edition on it. My old PC was W98SE.
It is not starting out well - the new PC keeps locking up and spontaneously rebooting.
As I load my favourite programs onto the new machine (Goldwave, Studio, BIAB v10 etc) something I'm not clear on is whether its safe to load onto XP anything that ran ok on 98 ?

So far, all my 98 programs work well on XP home.About the rebooting, Hope you haven't picked up that latest virus, I hear that's how it operates. Good luck !

Reboot sounds like a virus to me also. Like you, I am now in the process of switching to XP. Tread lightly is my advice to myself.

Thanks for the advice
I don't think its a virus, as the probs started even before I attached it to the Internet & it was built at the factory with all the latest patches..
I have been advised to run Regclean, so I'll give that a go and then I'll try a rollback to the original state before I added a few programs.
If that doesnt do it, looks like I'll have to send it back ..

Even though you had the problem before you hooked up to the internet it could still be a virus. Some of the manufacturers had some problems with viruses and Dell Computer was one of them. They got a virus in there mainframe and did not realize it until they had shipped truckloads of systems that were infected from the factory. You would think that the manufacturers would have the best anti virus software in the world but they don't.

well it won't even boot up now - just does the system health check and the memory check and then hangs. Won't let me into BIOS setup mode either. Looks like a hardware problem

First of all.....

XP Home Edition is possible the most worst O/S I've ever encountered.

My advise to you is:
1) Reformat the Hard Drive.
2) Reload Win 98SE back onto the machine.
3) Go to the MicroSoft web-site and get the patches and up-dates for 98SE.

XP Home Edition and "Malimiumn" (Sorry about the spelling there) are about the two worst things MicroSoft has ever forced onto the consumer.

"With that said".......
You may wish to take a good look at "Windows 2000 Professional" This is the O/S system that 98 should have been in the beginning. It won't choke up and/or trash the computer should something go wrong. Several times my system has been turned off before the proper shut-down sequence was used. It always comes back up.

All your programs should work O.K. with any newer O/S.
