I just got xp for my laptop, but for the sake of having more hard drive space, I'd like to uninstall 2000 underneath it. Does anybody know how I can do this? Thanks.

Mark, first, be sure that your laptop can handle XP. It's a resource hog. Make sure you have lots of hard disk space. nCheck the website for your laptop manufacturer for more information.

Probably your XP install will "step on" the Win2K operating system anyway. This will be done when the install asks if you want to format the hard drive. XP will typically replace the master boot record and all.

Why do you want XP anyway, hope there's a good reason, Win2K Pro is usually sufficient and more stable.

Probably the best way to do it is to wipe your HD first. If you have the full version of XP you can install it from there. If you have the upgrade version you need an existing Win 98 or 2000 OS on the HD, so you would need to reinstall 2000 and then install XP over it. You'll end up with a nice clean installation with no junk or wasted space.

There would be no question in my mind. Wipe the disk and start fresh. While not a laptop, I loaded XP over win 98se and within 3 weeks the computer was so slow it was unuseable. A good wipe cleared all the dingle berries and it's good as new.

Thanks.

How would I do the wipe? (Didn't mean it the way it sounded.) Right now I have the option when I boot to load xp or 2000.

My laptop can handle xp, but it eats up more space and I only have about 6 gigs total. I heard good things about 98SE and 2000, but I wanted to have all my pc's on the same OS for now.
