There's a serious lag between when I click on a selection, and when I hear the click and the page changes. I'm talking up to 30 seconds, during which time everything is frozen . Realizing the mouse is more likely a symptom than the root of this problem, what the heck is going on here? Any ideas?

It sounds like your computer is getting bogged down or else you're short of RAM.
Do you ever "defrag" your computer. If you are on the internet quite a bit you need to do this quite often.

Steve,

I may take a guess and say you have Windows 98? Is this correct? HUGE problem with this in Win98. Try the defrag and also try and get some more RAM if you can. But the real solution is to upgrade to Win2K or WinXP

Thanks, guys! I shoulda known better, but in a multi-user household the caches fill up quick!I emptied History and temp files, and that seems to have done it- now, time to defrag again- Thanks- Steve
